video surveillance through Sagetv

I'm interested in getting a home video surveillance system. Instead of using a separate piece of software it would be nice if this could be done through SageTV. Not only for recording but live viewing via the extender as well, has any body played around with this?

SageTV will not work as the recording engine, or at least it would not be worthwhile to invest in adding motion detection to trigger recording. This atop MPEG2 videwo which would eat HDDs like mad.


You should look at Geovision maybe the GV1120, if you have enough CPU you can have it running in the same box as SageTV just jumper the multiplex from the GV card to a free composite port on one of your encoders.

CollinR - with that AverMedia card I got from you, I can't put them in the same box as my PVR250&Vboxx as the AverMedia software refuses to install, i think you may have previously said it was security-related. Is that true with the GV1120 as well?

jc8367 - I messed with using Sage for recording, but as CollinR mentions, it doesn't work nice. However, routing the composite output form my AverMedia CCTV card into one of my PVR500 inputs works quite nicely. I can view it with the extender, plus the native AverMedia software is awesome. It's a pretty finicky card though, doesn't work unless you use one of their supported chipset mobo's.

Geovision is much looser on what cards can also be in the system, also the GV1120 is a much more expensive setup without IP based camera support (today). All things are a trade off but what I would do if I were you is install a SageTV trial on the Aver box and then add your tuners one at a time starting with the Hauppauge units. I would wager a specific tuner is causing your problem (vBoxx). Basically Geovision looks closer at the card to determine if it is authentic and Avermedia... well they obviously aren't. The software thinks you are tring to install the software on a system with a cloned card.

I have had a PVR500+ Geovision going in one system, when my new parts come in this week I'll try Aver + 2 PVR500s and see what we get.
