good news.......i'm beta testing the new Ziova CS615 network media player (which is based on the sigma 8634 chipset).

i can report that the sample hd-pvr file posted at

ftp://ftp.shspvr.com/download/moive_..._1080i_h264.ts

plays fine streaming to my beta CS615.

one caveat for home theater systems:
the audio is AAC and if you're using a home theater receiver with audio connection via optical (e.g. spdif), your receiver must be capable of decoding AAC (ooops, my yamaha doesn't and will have to be upgraded).

The captured file was AAC audio? That's not good. I don't think there are AAC-capable receivers. At least, not any available in the North American market. I know there are, or used to be, some available in Japan.

But related to this, has there been any official word on how multichannel audio capture will work (or if it will work at all)? I believe some have suggested it will copy the raw AC3 bitstream and save it separately from the video file. That sounds a little clunky and I'm concerned about synchronization issues.

guess we have to wait to hear from hauppauge.

When I asked them about it at CES it sounded like it did not re-encode the format of the digital audio coming in via SPDIF. It just "muxed" it into a combined stream.

Going from DD to AAC would imply realtime transcoding which didn't seem to be going on.

well, aac is the default audio codec for mp4, right?
so it has to become common pretty soon

Correction - it will play in Sage if and only if I open up Graphedit first. I render the media file, click play in Graphedit and it is smooth as butter. Close graphedit, Sage plays first frame but time bar moves. Open graphedit, render media file, click play in Sage, plays like champ. Any ideas why?

Tried the clip on my gaming machine just to see and WMP had to download the codec but did play it, just with no sound. However nothing else would touch it.

My biggest concern right now will be if my Sage machine has the HP to play it back. CPU usage on my C2D was fairly high and it's quite a bit faster than my Sage machine.

For the fun of it, I called Hauppauge Sales today and was told the product should hit the market toward the end of May, early June.

I guess I won't be watching the entire baseball season through SageTV still....

I was waiting for one of these as my next HTPC upgrade but with the setbacks I'm thinking I'll get a HD extender next (assuming I can before they re-re-sell out) and let them release and then de-bug this thing first.

It's possible that looking at who started this thread might give a clue on who else may be working on a release of one of these devices.

There are several companies using the same technology as Hauppauge is for this device. How they are using that technology differs though and Hauppauge is the only one I've heard of that is nearing a release - especially for HTPC's.


And it would be really awesome if SageTV came out with their own version And make it release before Hauppauge does and I'll be even more happy....

An OEM relationship like the one for the MVP? or the HD extender?

But wait .... the tease by the OP was that SageTV might have some control of the name of the device ... like the SageTV HD Media Extender. SageTV haven't been rebadging MVP's for ages and it's even listed in the store as a Hauppauge MediaMVP now.

Whatever the hardware, the key factor, as shown with the HD-100, is the integration into SageTV. From past experience though, there's probably not much to worry about in that area either.

Hauppauge If you've been waiting to get your hands on the new HD-PVR from Hauppauge, you might have to wait a little bit longer. Brent Evans reports that the device, which had been targeted for a late March launch has been pushed back and is now scheduled for a May or June release.

The HD-PVR will be able to capture HD video from any component video output and compress it in real time to H.264. In other words, you can using your existing cable or satellite box to flip channels, and record HDTV without getting a CableCard tuner for your PC.

Evans has also learned that Windows Media Center will not support the new device at launch, but that you should be able to use the HD-PVR with a Windows Media Center machine by this summer. But we'd be surprised if the device isn't supported by third party media center software like SageTV, BeyondTV, and MythTV.
