I just put together a new system and I'm running Sage 6.3.5 with the default stv. I have a Hauppage 1800 and a Hauppage 250. I'm tuning QAM over the 1800. For some reason, I can't get the closed captioning to turn off. In fact, I can't even find the option in the settings.

If you shut down Sage and go into the sage.properties and/or sageclient.properties files, there is a line cc_option_enabled=, that, if set to true will allow you to enable/disable captions in the Options Pop-up menu.

However, I'm not sure which card is being used when I watch SD, the 250, or the analog tuner on the 1800. Is there any way to tell?

If you are using the default UI, You can to go into the recording info screen for the recording and see what tuner recorded it. It should say "encoded by ...."

At any rate, the problem seems to be related to the mpeg2 video decoder filter, since when I change that the captions also change. One setting gives normal captions, another gives random characters.

Some of the decoders can properly display digital captions (WinDVD) and some do gibberish (PowerDVD). Pretty much all hte DVD-capable decoders can do analog captions. Get the option to turn on/off captions and you should be set.
