Does HD Extender run java?
I'm not familiar with the SD extender, but I believe its UI is essentially a VNC rendering from the server.
Is this also true for the HD extender? I just ordered one under the assumption that it was not (and that I could put Java-based plugins on the extender and not use server resources for screen drawing, etc, etc). But I've suddenly realized I may have made a bad assumption... |

For any of the types of remote clients (MVP extender, HD extender, Placeshifter), SageTV is actually running on your server, which then sends commands to the remote client. These commands vary by the capabilities of the client (MVP can't do the new animations, but the HD extender can). But, any code is running on the server, so all customizations run in that app's space. So, no, you wouldn't be installing any customizations on the HD extender itself.

To expand a bit, if you're talking Java extensions executed via STVs, they are executed on the server.

Thanks, guys. If I'm talking about decoding APE music files using a java library, I'm not going to be able to do that on the extender, then, it seems from what I now understand.

Not really. The extender plays FLAC though, JRMC can convert to FLAC for you.

Now how did you know that's where I was going with that?

I'm considering reviving my attempt to do a JRMC plugin, given that I can't exactly run JRMC on an extender. I'd really like to be able to live with extenders as my only clients at some point.

I've given up on using "video-centric" devices for music. IMO things like the Squeezebox/Roku are much better suited to music. Mostly because for my use, the display (TV/Projector) and listening to music largely mutually exclusive.
