SageTV Setup question - offload processing power from my HTPC to my fileserver!

My desire is to do the following :

1. Record shows
2. Transfer to my server
3. Remove commercials
4. Convert to divx or xvid and remove the mpeg
5. Index accordingly.

The steps are interchangeable so long as I take processing power away from my HTPC…

Questions:

How do STVi’s work? Do I just import the service and I can use it? I have seen some complex installations and was wondering if I can download the STVi’s if that is a more or less painless way of installing?

Background:

HTPC: Windows XP MCE, Pentium-M running at 1.7Ghz, 2 gig DDR2 RAM
Server: Windows XP Professional, A64 3200+, 1 gig DDR RAM


For this project I want to be able to take as much processing off of my HTPC and move it to my server… my HTPC’s board supports PCIe, the server’s board doesn’t. I use the PCI-e avermedia combo as my source, if that info is relevant :-P

My server just acts as a file server and it is an A64 3200+ with 1 gig of DDR RAM, as a file server I can imagine that it can handle both file serving and converting, or if I can schedule the converting to M-F between 7AM-5PM (while I am at work and the file server is idle) and at night from 1AM-5AM that’d be great. I use the TV in and out from 5 AM until I leave at 7AM. Thanks!

All but conversions will be pretty obvious once you have it installed.

The STVi is an add-on package for existing STVs, it only provides the SageTV interface functionality of the deal. ie Commskip STVi will not automatically install Commskip or DirMon.

You want it to record to the fileserver then run Commskip there.

Conversion will be tough if not impossible if you use placeshifter or MVPs.

Indexing will be auto magic, just configure the directories properly.

The compression and especially transcoding is done on the server internal to SageTV.

You can have compression done remotely if you desire, I don't so I can't help much.

Transcoding for MVP and placeshifter would be tough if not impossible.

Automagic = You don't have to do anything.
