Best Remote EVER!!!

I am so excited... Down to one remote!!! I finally got an affordable remote that has all of the right buttons, not a lot of extra crap AND allows mapping of power and volume to TV.
I speak of the lowely DirecTivo peanut. Got three from Woot last week for $8.00 including shipping.
One question... I have set the volume +/- to operate the TV and that works fine. But, I set the UP and DOWN to be UP/VOL+ and DOWN/VOL-, but this does not seem to control volume at all.

Any thoughts?

Also, to be honest, I have a couple gripes about the remote, so it's still not perfect.

Button lay out is an easy one had operation, but the direction buttons are not right under your thumb, instead the transport buttons are.

The select is not in the center of the direction, instead below.

Lastly, no backlight.

How did you get it to work with SageTV? I have a SnapStream Firefly from my old BeyondTV purchase that I gave up trying to get working with SageTV. The Hauppauge remotes work well on the MVP and the IR sensor when I had a PVR card in my PC, but now that I have it in my SageTV server I lost that feature.

I mapped my TiVo remote through USB-UIRT. Works great.

That's because the Firefly software requires that you manually edit XML files to configure an application not already supported. So either you review the "How to" on Snapstream forums to know how to edit those XML files or you use a third party software to operate the remote and configure it with a GUI (like Girder, EventGhost or my software : see my signature).

Here's how I have some of the others:

DirecTV - Menu
Thumbs Up - Watched
Thumbs down - Don't like

Play - Play/Pause
Pause - Stop (you really need a stop with Sage)

Window - Aspect ration toggle

Anyone figured out a good way to change the markings on a remote? Like remove the Pause symbol and add a Stop symbol?

Usually you go in the "Detailed Setup" / "Command Settings" and choose the "Link Infrared/Keystroke to SageTV command".

The you select the command (Volume Up or Left/Volume Up etc..) and then follow the instruction for pressing the corresponding button on the remote. If your remote currently issue two IR codes for the same button you'll need to learn both of them.

Are the volume commands the only ones to not work?

I think you misunderstood.

The volume buttons activate both the Sage control as well as the TV... and I get double the effect. This works OK unless I want to listen to music through the receiver. Then I end up with the Sage volume at something else when I switch back to tv.

I still don't understand exactly what is your exact problem here... The part that I don't understand is what devices are exactly running and when. For instance when you listen to music : do you use SageTV, is the TV running?

Because if SageTV or the TV is off, then changing the volume should not change the volume of the device that is currently unused. Or do you want the SageTV volume and the TV volume to be always in sync?

Personally I resolved my volume control issue by only changing the PC master volume : all sounds that I can listen to go through the PC (including the game console). So the stereo receiver volume is never touched. TV volume is never touched (but speakers on TV are not used).

It is much more simpler like this; with the added benefit that when you start an activity you can set the volume level on the PC to a predefined value => this is much more difficult to do this with a stereo receiver but doable (with the USB-UIRT you can create some scenario, the PC controlling external devices volume)

Thanks for the comments... and sorry for the confusion

Upon a bit more usage, I guess it is a non-issue now. The real problem is the variation in volume level for different encoders. I always try to keep the PC at max volume (as I understand it, you loose some of the digital information when you decrease the volume in windows apps). One would invariably have to make a quick volume adjustment when switching to a new file using the PC volume since that is the control in hand. Over usage, one vol or the other would end up so low that I would loose volume granularity. With the single remote, I don't have to worry about the PC volume ever being reduced.

Music tends to be much more normal volume level. The problem there would be that the PC volume level would not ever be at the same level.

So, now I'm even happier with this solution.
