External USB drive and no. of streams

I thought I'd add a WD "My Book Essential" (USB 2.0) to WHS, to use as a recording drive (Formatted to 64k and not added to pool; Wired GigE). Disaster...took forever to spin-up, which caused some "No Signal" issues. Stuttered out the wazoo as well (Encoding and/or playback). After messing with the MMCSS service in Vista I realized it wasn't network performance, as internal drives on other machines streamed content fine. Decided to now use the drive to store VIDEO_TS content...every file gave a Region Code Error...moving them to a network internal drive played back normally again.

This drive's behavior was wierd, to say the least...hope I just got a bad one.
