Stripping out illegal chars from string

I'm trying to make readable file names out of show/episode names but I need a way to strip out the illegal chars. Is there a search/replace string function that I can use?

Java has a repalceAll function that the default STV uses in a few places. Maybe something like:

java_lang_String_replaceAll(string, "[^A-Za-z0-9]", "")

I'm not that great with regular expressions, so you would just have to have some regex that works for the chars you want to keep.
