XBO360 and plasma tv's

Anyone doing any gaming using a plasma tv and xbox360 (or other gaming systems)

I know there can be problems with burn-in on a plasma. I have a samsung plasma TV, and dont do too much gaming on although I would like to, but fear burn-in backlash against me.

The samsung has a pixel shifting feature (dont know how well it actually works to prevent burn in) and whitewashing features. Still though...am leary of gaming on it. Boy hooking up a PC to it would be sweet. But most if not all games always have some elements that mostly remain in same place on screen. Which is bad for plasma's. I had people at bestbuy tell me they gamed for like 4 hours on their plasma regularly and didnt have burn-in. hmmm

If you calibrate the TV to reasonable/correct brightness/contrast (ie not the Torch Mode they ship the things in) then burn-in is not a significant problem.

That's not to say that you don't need to worry about it, it can happen and you need to be aware of it, but if you just use some common sense you'll be fine.

Oh, and games are really no worse than the news channels and their logos/banners.

And for full disclosure, I don't own a plasma, but do own a CRT that I ran my Xbox on with no ill effects.

I have my Xbox360 hooked up to my Panasonic Plasma, and boy does it looks nice. I have yet to have issues with burn-in, and my girlfriend and I enjoy playing Guitar Hero II, which has a lot of static images on it. We have played it for several hours straight on consecutive days.

Like Stanger though as long as you don't have it in Torch mode (mine is called Vivid) it will cut down on the brightness level greatly. Following the instructions for the first 100 hours is also a good idea to extend the life of the TV as well.

Here is a link with info on Burn-in and steps to prevent it:
http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/p...tv-burnin.html

Here is a software program (free version available) that can also help with reducing burn-in, and can potentially fix dead pixel (for you LCDers).
http://www.jscreenfix.com/index.php

The bottom line is that you must stay conscience of what is on the screen and how long it has been there.

Hope this helps,
Protoman

FWIW, "Torch mode" isn't actually a "mode" on the TV, it refers to the way TV manufacturers ship their sets with brightness cranked all the way up, and everything setup to make the TV as bright as possible.

Yeah, I know what you meant. It really sucks that the manufacturers ship with it turned on, especially since they are the ones that basically say to turn it off for the first 100 - 200 hours of use... They deserve a big DEE-Dee-dee. I am hoping that my Plasma allows for per input video settings. Then I can crank it up for my DVD players and for Sage, and keep it at safer levels for the Xbox 360.

Thanks,
Protoman

And you know why they do that? So that the display models at the big box stores look good on display in the bright showrooms and compared to the competitors right next to it.

When my parents went to shop for a new DLP, they were like "that one looks good, its so bright". Had to tell them to ignore the brightness because it was in Torch Mode, and the first thing we were gonna do was adjust it so it looked good at their house.

I turned my plasma up to Torch mode last night just to see what it looks like again, and I could feel a pain in my eyes from looking at it. I think it should be renamed from Torch Mode to Burn Your Eyes Out Mode. I was doing this test to see if I could do per input settings for the plasma, but it does not.

Thanks,
Protoman

I am leery of getting burnin on the plasma. oooh that would suck. So I dont use it for games very much. But I will experiment with the settings some more. I did adjust them as soon as I got it home. But its been a while now, and I dont remember where I left off on that project.

I know it has a *game mode*...so I will have to research that too again, and see what it really means. But I can always dial down the brightness, etc ...myself...and then play for a while. If I just limit game play to an hour or 90 minutes with lower settings, sounds like I would be OK.

Also, the samsung plasma has whitewashing and pixel shifting built in, so I can always run that after gaming.

When I get my next HD tv, its going to be an LCD because then I can do whatever I want with it and I wont have to worry about burn-in. It seems LCD's have come a long way in past two years.

It seems like most networks use a semi-transparent logo these days. I think they must know they dont want to burn their logo into someones screens. :-) Although I suppose if they burned CBS permanently into your screen...hey maybe they wouldnt mind that too much
