New PC -- Need to Move Sage Over

Just found answers in the FAQ. Didn't search on the right keywords

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been running SageTV for about three years now. Time to move it to my new machine.

I want to make sure I do this right so I don't lose all the information on my recorded shows and my setups.

I'm assuming I can just do a clean install of Sage Media Center on the new PC, and copy over it the contents of the "old" common and sagetv directories, correct? I have the added challenge that drives and directories are no longer the same so I'll have to content with that as well.

I was hoping to get some suggestions from others who may have done this before.

Thanks in advance.

George

I just did it. New PC has one drive/folder for all recordings. Old PC had 3 drives, one folder per drive.

It's tricky and the FAQs on doing this were unclear to me (and others).

If you need help, PM me. I and others have written on this in the forums but a clear and concise set of instructions is no where to be found.

I'm going to have to do this soon. I didn't realize it was tricky. I thought you could just install Sage, copy over sage.properties and wiz.bin files and copy the recordings to your recordings folder (or, just overwrite the new Sage directory with the old). Then you start Sage, change your recording directories, and restart Sage. I think Sage is suppose to find the old recordings automatically.

Doesn't that work? What did you end up doing?

It isn't really tricky -- see the Q&A about moving to a new PC in this long FAQ about moving recordings, etc.

Note that you do not want to copy your properties file, which is why the FAQ only mentions copying wiz.bin and the recordings, after SaegTV is configured on the new system.

If dealing with Vista, see this FAQ for info about where you might find wiz.bin.

Success

Thank you Opus for your post on Vista. I didn't realize that the UAC function of Vista was making shadow copies of my files. Somehow in multiple attempts at migrating SageTV, I had shadow copies in both the program files and program files (x86) directory of my virtual store (running Vista 64 on my new machine).

Long story short I uninstalled SageTV, used a DOS window to clearout the virtual store and reinstalled. I ran through the configuration wizard and pointed it to my directories. After shutting down SageTV I moved my wiz.bin file over and restarted and now see all my recordings.

I had not seen issues like that with the virtualstore before, but then again, I have not had this new machine up and running for more than about two weeks.
