Mac and Studio

I would like to try some things in Studio.

My SageTV server is running on a Linux box in the basement.

My main machine is a Mac.

I've tried various ways to get Studio running on the Linux box and display on the Mac remotely (remote X session, VNC session, etc), but they don't really work well. They are either too slow or don't work fully (as of 6.1, I haven't tried 6.2 yet.)

Now that there is a SageTV Client for the Mac, I think I should be able to use a licensed SageTV Client to run Studio locally on the Mac. (I couldn't test this myself, I don't yet have a SageTV Client license, and Studio is not available during the trial period.)

Is this correct? Has anyone done this?

That won't work, the studio process is launched from the server. You'll want to set up an X server on the mac and forward studio to it from the linux server.

This xserver might work, but I haven't tried it:

Are you sure? He is talking about the Mac client, not Placeshifter for the Mac. On the Windows client it is launched locally and I believe is a java app. So technically it could run local on a Mac client. (I don't have one so I can't test the Mac stuff.)

Studio operates the same on a Mac as on Windows: a full/local client UI opens Studio locally when you use the Customize command. A remote client (Placeshifter or Media Extender) will try to open the Studio window on the server.

Since the Mac has a full client available, that one will open Studio locally. A Mac PS client opens Studio on the server, if possible.

I've tried this "use Placeshifter to launch Studio on the server then use a remote desktop to view it remotely" thing (with a Linux server and a Placeshifter client on a Mac).

It works but it's a major pain to get set up and working.

Yes, Gerry is correct. I was asking about the SageTV Client for the Mac (that's "Client" with a capital "C") not the SageTV Placeshifter client (that's "client" with a small "c"). The product naming unfortunately doesn't help the situation since "Clients", "Placeshifters", and "MVPs" are technically all "clients" from the server's perspective, and the use of the word "client" in the forums could mean any, all, or a specific subset of those three things depending on the context.

And I did get a response from Sage support also. Using a Client (capital "C" ) on Windows or Mac allows Studio to be launched locally. I haven't tried it but apparently you can even launch Studio if the Client can't reach the server, which means you can do Studio development during that next long plane trip if you are so inclined.
