QAM Question

Ok, I know this sound incredibly ignorant of me...but:

Do I need to have hd 'cable service' if I want to use hdhomerun for clear qam recording? Or is it delivered "for free" (In the same what that OTA HD is "free") over the standard cable?

Unscrambled QAM channels are available for free on standard cable. The number of channels, if any, very by cable provider. I can receive more channels OTA with a small indoor antenna than through QAM.


Edit: Wow looking at the list Opus4 links to, so people do get a lot of unscrambled QAM channels, I can only get the HD version of the major networks plus a bunch of music channels.
