Goto Setup->Help->System Information. Then look at the Java Version line. If not 1.6.0_03. Then goto http://www.java.com/en/ to get the current Java version.

Did install VISTA SP1 RC1, took some reboots, and my MVP is working again as it did under XP. I have done this a few days ago and have been using it giving it some extra work (quick sequence of remote control commands) ... works great ... finally .

HURRAY! A Christmas present from the Sage forums. I am downloading SP1 now and I will test it in a bit. Mine worked great while watching shows but if I wanted to skip through comercials I would have to hit the button then wait about 15 seconds or more then hit it again. If I hit it too many times too quickly it would lock up but the video would keep playing then after 30-60 seconds it would catch up on all the commands I tried while it was locked up and then show the circle for about 30 more seconds. It only rebooted twice in the past several months but I dont know why.

Somewhat off topic question. Can I watch a DVD that is in my main Sage computer through my extender? I am about to get an HD DVD drive for my PC and just want to know if it will work. On my main system I will be using Power DVD to watch them on my HDTV but I want to eliminate the DVD player in the bedroom.

I just wanted to post a quick note + fix on this issue in case anyone else is battling this in Vista. I have the following system specs:

software:
Windows Vista SP1
SageTV 6.3.6
SGraphRecorder
PureVideo Codecs

hardware:
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 rev 2.1 (gigabit LAN onboard)
QuadCore 6600 CPU
Nvidia 8800 GT
2 Gigs Ram
Dual Hauppage PVR-500's

My MVP was unwatchable it was stuttering so bad. SP1 didn't make any difference. I tried everything I could think of, plus all the suggestions in this thread, disabling Vista's autotuning (apparently this solves a lot of vista-related networking issues), reducing TCP window size, etc. Nothing worked, so I installed WireShark and recorded the packet-level conversation between the MVP and Vista. What I saw was a ton of dropped packets, and lots of TCP retransmissions, which doesn't make sense to me when Vista + the MVP are plugged directly into the same Gigabit switch.

I did some searching on the specific TCP errors that were being detected by Wireshark (duplicate ACK x 3+, followed by retransmissions). Some TCP guru said this is a classic case of a speed+duplex mismatch between the devices.

I dropped Vista's NIC from Gigabit to 100meg full duplex. Problem fixed immediately!!

I'm not crazy about losing the bandwidth, but the truth is the jump from 100meg to gigabit isn't as big as you'd think anyway, due to various technical constraints. I can still easily record 3 shows at once over the network, plus stream to the MVP. Hopefully someone will find this info useful.

Gigabit won't help for streaming, but for a video file copy from your SageTV Server to your workstation it definitely helps. See attached screenshot for the gigabit utilization when doing ONE video file copy from my SageTV server to my laptop. Definitely makes a difference! It's going solid at 50-60%, which is 5-6 times faster than 100mpbs. And that's without any RAID 0 striping. When I was copying from my other server with RAID 0 over 2 disks, I was going at 97% of gigabit steady.

Not necessarily true. Because each client or extender by itself won't use that much bandwidth a gigabit connection on your server will allow multiple connections without saturating the server's bandwidth. Meaning, as long as all the other subsystems, mainly the bus to the ethernet card and hard disks, can keep up the server should be able to serve multiple clients simultaneously without the network connection being the bottleneck.
