Unhappy Media Extender Black Screen

I just setup Sage 6.1.9 and can view tv on the server. I installed the client on another machine and can view it fine that way too. I bought a media extender, set it up, get wireless access, get an IP, get to "loading application" and then the tv just goes to a black screen. Nothing after that. Hitting any buttons on the remote does nothing, it is just a black screen. Any ideas?

It isn't a firewall issue as I have it disabled on the server. Also, my other pc can connect as a client and it works fine. I've powered the extender off and on probably 10 times (waiting several minutes between off and on). I've rebooted the server, restarted SageTV and rebooted the WAP and everything else and I still get the same thing. Black screen on the extender tv, but tv works on the server and the pc client. I have no idea what to try next.....

Have you tried starting it wired to see if you get the same problem? I personally own a wired MVP but I've read lots of grief stories about people having problems getting the wireless MVP's to work wireless on SageTV.

I went back to 6.1.9 and plugged an ethernet cable in and it works now. I've got other goofiness, but that is probably because I am new to the system. I'm really glad I spent the extra $$ for the wireless version since it appears to be totally useless.....

Yeah, I think that many of us did. FWIW, I'm under the impression that it's really a Sage issue with the wireless, rather than the device itself. That is, you can use it in wireless mode with the stock Hauppauge software in many situations where Sage won't work.

I had mine going for a week or two with Sage, but the random losses of connectivity weren't worth it. Easier to install a wired connection though brick and plaster for me.

Unfortunately, you're not alone

I ran into exactly the same issue months ago and it was never resolved. See the thread here for all the things that I did to try to get it up and running. Alas, where I live now I CAN'T run a wire to it so I'm completely out of luck.

I bought this cable at Walmart that's as thin as a ribbon cable and was 50'. I ended up getting it run along the base of the wall when my old wireless 802.11g router was always stuttering with video (and that was before the wireless unit came out -- this was just hooking up the MVP up via ethernet to this device).

The cable is flat enough to be run under carpeting. Otherwise, places sell ethernet over power cables.

But after using that over 802.11g, I opted for the wired one. In order to get good playback, the units had to be in the same room. If I were going to do that, I'd save money and buy an ethernet cable.

re the wireless MVP - try this: on your wireless router, disable non-standard features like Turbo, Frame-bursting, etc.

Connect a wireless bridge to your wired MVP, problem solved... That seems tow work better than a wireless MVP, based on posts around here. Thats what I do and it works great.
