DVD player error

Somehow I lost the ability to play some DVDs in Windows Media Player. I get the following error message:

Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.

I've installed the most current drivers to no avail. I also purchased the latest Sonic CinePlayer plugin for Media Player and it doesn't help either.

I tried an evaluation copy of WinDVD 8 and it plays fine.

SageTV bombs with a sage.PlaybackException Error (-8,0x2) There is a problem playing content due to Macrovision or CSS.

Is SageTV set up to use a DVD-capable decoder in Detailed Setup -> DVD?

I doubt this is the issue, because you said it played in WinDVD 8, but how is the video card connected to your TV? If you've connected via component, see the info & links in this post & those following it.

I changed SageTV to use the WinDVD decoder and I get the same error. Is it still "using" Media Player even though the codec changed?

I'm not sure what the issue is. Some DVDs play so I think it has to do with copy protection. (BTW I have no bootlegs. They are all authentic.)

I did read the post and I am connected via analog. I guess I could try playing around with the resolution, etc. That never occured to me.

What gets me is that WindDVD works and Media Player doesn't. How does Media Player know what codec to use? Can you configure this somewhere?

I use to be able to play the same DVDs that fail now on this system. I did a lot of cleanup/upgrade to this box before I installed SageTV. The weird thing is that I tried my other system and I'm having the same problem there too. One common thing is that I upgraded to the newest ATI drivers on both systems. They both have Radeon cards, but different models.
