All the music I've bought in my whole life I've listened to first. Maybe it was radio, maybe it was a friend, or maybe it was on the internet. Of course people arn't going to buy everything they download illegally, people are getting especially poor these days people buy what they can afford. If they wern't charging so much they would probably get some sympathy. Trent Reznor (NIN) on a Herald Sun Interview says he will never produce another album with his recording label. They charge 6-8 Dollars more for his CD than newer pop albums that do not have a already established fan base. He does not get any of this money. When he asks why his CD cost so much more they tell him because his CD has fancy packaging and a color-changing ink. But HE PAYS the 83 cents per CD for the packaging out of his profit! And he also admits he downloads all his music on the internet. They are liars and theives... And We should put a bill though congress that makes taking advantage of the american people, and corrupting our government life in prison for all people involved. |

Part of the deal is that we control it. We don't need the government to step in and put price controls on anything. That's the beauty of our capitalist system. Most industries, when they get out of hand pricewise, that leaves opportunity open for someone to create a new business , or product, or realign an existing business to push the out of hand business away. It results in either the existing business fixing the problem, or eventually bankrupting itself.
That being said, part of the problem with doing anything about the recording industry, the same as the gasoline/energy industry, is that it is hugely established and there is no real competition, so they can pretty well get away with whatever they want. Typical industries do not have such a lock on markets, the music industry really has a lock on it because of longstanding deals and back room negotiations, well planned supply routes with customers, etc. Energy industries have a stranglehold mainly because of the price of initial setup is so extremely high and government regulation is extraordinarily outrageous, that it prevents anyone from seeing a benefit to going into business. A company is nothing more than one individual with the passion and drive to make a change that either has the resources or can convince others to invest in his/her idea because it makes sense(financially). If the system is broken(and it is) it really needs someone like Trent Reznor, or someone else with a passion for it, knowledge of the industry, and a desire to change it, to step up to the plate and get other people who believe like he does to change. That would involve I think a hell of a lot more (energy and financially)than most people are willing to do. Competition breeds competitiveness(of course it does, that's what it says). Competitiveness is good for us, the consumer. Prices stay at certain price points, products get progressively better, quality control is self regulating. If things fall out of line with a company, sales/profits start to slide while other companies sales/profits go up. Apple introduces the Ipod, sales go through the roof, every other company that can make mp3 players tries to emulate the Ipod, some are marginally successful and they recapture some of the market(money) they lost by Apple making the Ipod. It wasn't because everyone just liked Apple more than all the other companies that everyone bought Ipods, it was because it was(is) a superior product than every other mp3 player on the market. It's like that with everything to a certain point, certainly not many things are as extremely evident as the Ipod illustration. With the gasoline industry, what it will take is someone who has the idea(existing idea or new idea) that solves the problem, not only that, but they are going to have to have or get the financial ability to take the product to market, and the drive and desire to see it through all the hassle that goes along with changing an industry. Many other people in the past and present have done this exact thing, changed the world so to speak, or changed one little part of the world. It's not easy, I wish more people had the balls to do it, and it seems like each day the barriers to making that happen get incrementally taller and taller, but it happens and it will continue to happen. I just hope I see more of it than less of it each day/week/year. ps. sorry for the long winded blah blah fest |
