occasional ghosting in video

Hi

I have noticed an occasional ghosting when watching video in sage recently. Almost like a deinterlacing problem (see screenshot).

I've only ever seen it on Simpsons episodes recorded on channel 4 in the UK.

The recording in the screenshot is from April 2007 and was recorded with 6.1.7. I have an avi of an earlier recording of the episode from April 2006. It was also recorded with Sage (4.1.12 I think) and it does not display the same ghosting.

Is this a problem introduced with a later version of sage? Could it be that channel 4 have changed the way they broadcast?

Any ideas appreciated.

thanks
paul

If you use the nVIDIA purevideo decoder, try changing the deinterlacing setting or the version of the graphics card driver you use.

Many people report that the only way they get good results is with the v84.21 drivers.

It's a known problem with nVIDIA de-interlacing, nobody knows why.

If you aren't using purevideo then the above is all tosh and doesn't apply to you.

Doesn't look like the interlacing I get at all, mine looks more like stripes.

If you're using a booster, have you tried decreasing the gain?

What video card are you using ?

If you are using a ATI card, there is a TRDenoise setting you need to add to the registry.

cheers

I haven't seen ghosting as you depict it, but almost every channel I get 'smears' when actors move. I'm using one of the 3.xGb qualities.

If you are using a hardware mpeg2 encoder that might be something to do with hardware motion compensation or spatial/temporal filters. If you are using a Hauppauge product christweek will allow you to alter these settings.

On my wintv pvr usb2 I have both the spatial and temporal filters disabled. They are supposed to be used when the video source is unclean - my sky digibox is a reasonably clean source so they are unnecessary
