Q about 350s and DVDs

Just wondering what specifically prevents the 350 from playing DVDs. I know encryption is one thing. What else is there, menus, multiple streams?

I ask because I have a project in mind, but I don't want to start it if there's no way to play DVDs through it.

BTW, I generaly rip movies to my HDD and strip all menues/extras/audio streams before I watch them anyway.
