DVI to Hitachi RPTV woes

I've trying to connect my PC to my TV with the DVI connection. I'm just not getting what resolutions I should be able to use.

PC has a Radeon 9200 with DVI and the TV is a Hitachi 51GWX20B rear projection 16:9 HD unit.

Using Powerstrip I have tried a whole bunch of settings and the only one I have been able to get to display a desktop and fit on the screen is 856x480. If I want to get a 1080i video to the TV wouldn't I want to use a 1920x1080 resolution?

Anybody else have a similar setup and what are you using?

1120x630 seems to be the best option for me on my JVC 48" TV through DVI. This gives me a 720p picture with no overscan. Even small text is readable though not entirely sharp. Some minor movements of the picture (up and to the left) were necessary to center it. I am using Powerstrip with a Radeon 9200 as well.

I believe that the overlay image is 480p even at full screen. Someone else can elaborate but I thought that was a limitation of the overlay.

Why do you need 1080i? Are you using an HD card with Sage? or just future-proofing?
