How to movie from cable to satellite with Sage

Sadly, or joyously depending on your point of view, I'm going to be buying a house in an area that cable service isn't universal yet. So I will likely go with Satellite, but what are my options of using sage in such a setup?

Currently I have a pvr-350 and pvr-250 in a box and sage handles that fine. I would like to keep the ability to record 2 channels at the same time. My other option as I see it is to go with DirectTV and get a Samsung SIR-4120R receiver as that will support the recording of 2 channels and give me a signle remote for the dvr and the sat. receiver.

Thoughts?

You would have to go with 2 DirecTV receivers and connect each one separately to the separate tuner cards. You won't need to worry about a remote for the satellite receiver as you'll do everything through SageTV.

I thought of that setup and was worried that I would need a couple IR blasters/usbirts and that the signals for one receiver might stray and cause the other receiver to change channels too. Also it was my understanding from a fellow dish network owner that the IR blaster needs to be right in front of the receiver and that can be a bit unsightly. I haven't verified this, as I've never seen it in action, maybe it is something unique to his setup. Anyway I haven't rules this setup out, just still trying to get a feel for my options. What I really need is a pci card that decodes satellite transmissions and has an open API so sage can talk to it. Sure, I'll just hold my breath while I wait for the networks to provide that one.

Why not use a serial cable? I use one with my RCA DRD435DRH & DirecTV and it works fine. That way you can have both hooked up via different COM ports.

More reliable than IR - don't have to worry about stray signals.

IVB, I have a data port (serial port) on the back of my Hughes HTL-HD HDTV receiver and would like to do this also. I haven't ordered my SageTV bundle yet but would be interested to know if there are some prefs in the Sage software that allows you to control the channel changing with the com port?

Do you have to know any codes for the data port on the directv receiver or does it JUST work?

Thanks,
Auggie
