tweaking the preset VCD quality

Hi all!

I have a Haupauge pvr-150 on my dads computer in NY (I live in another state). Did this bec I just have to get all the NY sports here or I might have to move back home. eek.

So I setup an ftp server on his machine and sagetv v6.
What I have been doing is via placeshifter I start a recording of a game I want to watch live. Then on my xbox via XBMC I just connect to the ftp and stream the recording as its building the file. This amazingly has worked just great for me.

The only thing is my dad's cable modem has about 250kB upstream so I had to set the recording quality to VCD (the lowest). It's ok for baseball but for hoops I would need to bump up the quality a bit.

I tried setting it to svcd but the video streams choppy. All higher settings are choppy as well.
I was wondering if I could edit the vcd-quality setting to just a little bit higher bitrate or if there was something else I should consider looking at.

I guess I would prefer to transcode to divx on the fly but looks like that card wont allow it. If anyone has suggestions on a card that will, moderate price of course, that would cool.
