multiple users on same machine

Hi y'all,

I have 3 users on my computer, my nephew, my son, and me. Sagetv works fine for me, not for them. If my son tries to watch TV on the computer logged in under his account, Sagetv launches, but freezes up moments after the channel is launched. What gives? Is this because it's the 15 day free trial, or is this indicative of the software package as a whole? Any competitors software that does a better job?

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like some of the software isn't usable to all users. XP Home or Pro? Do they have full access rights?

Works fine on my WinXP Pro with multiple users.

Are you using the Service? Are you closing down the SageTV UI on the first account before switching to the other account?

My understanding is that when the Service is running, each instance of STV opened acts like a 'client.' Try this approach.

XP Pro

Yes, I have XP Pro. I have tried rebooting the computer and going straight into my son's account (without accessing mine first) and still had the problem. He has admin priviledges, and I gave him full access rights to the program folders and files. I'll try stopping the service and then, going into his account.

Double checked permissions

I double checked permissions and he has full access to the program files and folders. He also has access to the folder where the recorded shows are saved, which had a couple of minutes of video (from the tv show). So, even though the screen freezes up, the video is still being recorded. I tried shutting the program down and then logging into his account, still the same problem. The only thing I can think of to ask is, does he need access to my documents (I have made that off limits to everyone but me)? Is there something going on in there with regards to SageTV?

Sounds strange. I'd contact support (they DO offer support for trial versions...cause if you get it working most likely you're going to buy it )

There's really nothing else I can think of. You say the software opens fine, but crashes on video startup, and you've already checked permissions on the data storage folder. Sage shouldn't need access to your Documents folder.

Have you tried enabling "debug_logging=TRUE" in the sage.properties file and seeing if anything shows up in the logs?

Are your video capture card drivers up to date?

debug

debug_msgs? There is no debug logging entry in sagetv properties. At least not in mine.

Thanks.

From the FAQ,

Quote:
Q: I have a problem using SageTV and was asked to enable debug logging. How do I do that?

A: There is a property file setting to enable debug logging.

Edit sage.properties and add this line:

debug_logging=TRUE

Enter the line exactly as shown above. TRUE must be in all CAPS for this property.

Before editing the properties file, make sure SageTV or the service is not running. If you edit the properties file while SageTV is running, the change will be ignored.

If you are using a client, edit sageclient.properties instead.

After this change, SageTV will create a new sagetv_0.txt and/or sagetvclient_0.txt log file in the SageTV installation directory each time it is run. Save those files from when a problem occurs to help track down a problem -- they can be emailed to betatest at sagetv.com

Jack,

Thanks for the reply. I used to live out that way (and got my license in Pomona). Sorry to seem so dull, but sometimes I just get tired of thinking (I work in computers/software).
