3D acceleration = problem with Sage or video drivers?
I had some big issues with stability and sluggishness in the past. Updated drivers and reinstalled things and it helped drastically. Last problem I have is Sage often locks up when bringing it out of standby, and I've been told by tech support that I should disable 3D acceleration to try to remedy this.
My question is, if this is indeed the cause, is this an issue with my video card's drivers, or SageTV itself? I just don't understand why 3D acceleration (obviously meaning, making use of my video card's hardware) would work fine in something like a high-end game, but not with something like SageTV. |

Its SageTV. They cant get it working right for some users to bring it out of standby.
I use FSE and 3D Acceleration as well, and nothing I do can I get Sage to not crash, hang, or resume as a solid black screen. With 5.04, it would crash out instantly. Now with 6.0.19, it does not crash, but is a solid black screen with a cursor. Does nothing at that point requiring almost a hard reboot to kill it, as trying to re-minimize/sleep/alt-F4, cannot be done as sage has stopped responding at that point. PITA. It would be nice if the sage devs can figure out whats wrong. Its not a complicated application in like relation to a full action 3d shooter game or something that DOES minimize and resume without fault. However like they mentioned, if you turn off 3d acceleraction, or turn off using FSE, then it will minimize fine and resume fine. However in my case, either of those turned off results in seriously aweful video playback (stuttery, jerky, tears...). |

I see. Well I already wasn't using FSE, but 3D acceleration was enough to cause the problem, about half the time I brought it out of standby. I don't have to restart the computer, just End Task Sage and reopen it.
Thing is, I can't tell if having it off degrades video quality or not. I don't see any stuttering or tears, but I can't tell if it's just...noisier or not. I hope this is something that's on the schedule for fixing! Is this a common, widely known issue that people have been asking for a resolution for? |

I think that 3D accelleration has to do with drawing the UI (menus). I've noticed that menu animation slows down considerably if I turn off 3D accelleration. I don't think it should have anything to do with video playback if you are using overlay.

Thanks, Mike. However, surprisingly, it just happened even with 3D acceleration off! That was a surprise. Hasn't happened since, though.
What could it be... Last edited by archcommus; 01-30-2007 at 11:03 PM. |

Do you know which version of java is installed on your machine? Some have reported bad problems with 1.5.x, many stick with 1.4.x for stability, and then there is the 1.6.x that is still being critiqued.
Might be related, might not be. But since you had a freeze with it even when you had both FSE and 3D off... might look it up just in case. |
