what to do with the old MVP when the new one comes

OK..I wanted to be the first to bring this up...

When the new HD extender gets here in 2Q, 07, what will we do with all of these "obsolete" MVP's? I have 2 wired ones and each bought within the last 6 months for about $90.

What else can they be used for?

I sure hope that Sage doesn't charge us a new license fee for the HD extender...I hope the 2 license fees I paid for the current MVP's are enough.

But, what else can we use the extenders for?

I had to ask..

If I had to guess the licence if required, will be bundled in the product price since it appears that the device will be a Sage branded item and not available elswhere. Much like the Sage MVP bundle is now.
I have no reason to beleive that the current Placeshifter/Media Extender licence scheme will change but they could I suppose make it different. However if its bundled in the price already it wont matter because you will get a new license when you purchase it from Sage.
As to making the MVP's obsolete, I plan on keeping mine hooked up to one of my non HD Tv's. It will be a long time before I replace all the SDTV's in the house with HDTV's.

I think I remember reading in another thread about extender licenses not being device specific; 1 license = 1 device, 2 = 2 concurrent, etc etc. Last year Sage had a glitch when I signed in remotely w/ PS and both PS and the MVP lost the link for a short bit. PS got the link back first and even though it was a trial the nags didn't show up. However, when the MVP linked back it had the nags until I unlinked PS and rebooted the MVP. Based on that I'd say that the number of installed licenses = the number of concurrent 'extenders'; whatever those may be.

I'm not sure how many MVPs I'll replace. I currently have 4 extenders and 1 PC client. The PC Client (my laptop) will get an HD Extender. The rest of the TVs - it'll really depend on the price, and it'll also depend on the improvements of watching DVDs through the extenders. I'd love to buy 5 of the HD extenders, but will probably only be able manage 2, maybe 3.

As far as what to do with the old extenders - ebay probably.

But, what do the current extenders do, other than being used for Sage?

They must do something. Can they be used for their original design concurrent with new HD extenders?

I have 2 extenders and 1 low end video card. I'll probably buy 2 HD extenders, one to use on the main PC instead of the video card for HD. And one to replace 1 MVP.

I heard the price was going to be around $180 per extender.

I hope you are right on the license. I am worried that since this is a "new" device that it will require a "new" license.

The MVPs are designed for playing back recorded media. Sage just offers a better interface. I'm not really sure what you would do with it if you replace it with something better. You should at least get a decent return back if you put it on ebay, assuming you have the original packaging and its in good shape.

I am planning of connecting mine to a small screen and to an amplifier and speakers and use it just to play music from the Music Library.

Other ideas include using the HAL STVi to control Home automation parameters.

You could give it away to a forum member who can't afford to buy one.

I did just that with an MVP years ago on another PVR forum. I hated the MVP, considered it unfit for sale considering all the bugs in the firmware and hardware (I test stuff like this for a living).

Hopefully they've improved since then.

With the version I had, the simple act of trying to skip through commercials (on a wired network) would hopelessly confuse the thing.

Then there was also the fact that their physical layer interface was either buggy or not standards compliant due to the fact that it only worked well, if at all, with certian ethernet cards/hubs/switches, and even then often the settings had to be fine-tuned.

Due to that experience someone would have to prove to me that the new ones worked before I'd spend a dime on one.

And that's precisely why I won't buy one.

Sage refuses to give a money back guarantee on MVPs sold through them. They gave a lame excuse about "licensing" which to be is just BS.

Until that changes, I won't be buying one.

You guys can alway put them on amazon for cheap so I can buy some of them. I'm still MANY years away from even owning a HD-TV.

Also, I could probably bet a small amount of $$ that it will require an HD-license. Sage <3s their licenses. Then again, I also think we'll see a license per tuner (kidding).

The HD-mvps sound nice if they perform better then the standard MVPs. It would definitely take a lot of stress of the server for playback. I just have this bad feeling about performance.

Man i am pessimistic today.
