Just watch no recording.

How do I choose not to record but just watch a TV program. Its very annoying that this program records even though you don't want to use the timeshift function... Its hogging my PCs resources... How do I stop it?

Also side question... I can't figure how to change a channel using the keyboard.. and no programs come up in the EPG... Is there a simple answer why? Does it need to connect to the internet for this info?

Thanks a lot in advance,

Chris

You can't stop it from recording. There are numerous threads discussing the benefits of always recording vs using a buffer like other PVR apps use if you want to read up on the benefits. The majority of people agree that the benefits of always recording make it the preferable method. I don't know what resources Sage is "hogging" other than disk space. My old Sage server was a celeron 366mhz and had 4 SD tuners and had no problems capturing 4 shows at once.

Sage needs to connect to the internet to download the EPG data. It downloads every 24 hours I believe.

Changing channels also seems to take a while...

Why does the EPG come from the internet when some countries such as UK provide this info over the air?

Cheers,

Chris

Not particularly keen on the program connecting to the NET unless absolutely necessary. What other information is it sending/recieving?

None. There is also a user manual available from the install. Choose help from in the Sage program. Or download it from the website. Please try to keep the same questions in one thread.

Does SageTV collect any information about my viewing habits through the SageTV Service?

SageTV Technologies, LLC respects your privacy and does not collect any personally identifiable information about your viewing habits without your prior consent. SageTV does collect information about your system configuration and system use pertaining to SageTV to help improve our services and support. For more information see our Privacy Policy.
To answer the next question, which will be what info are they gathering:

Let me clear this up before this thread gets any longer. The information we collect from your SageTV system when you hit the server is hardware specific. For example what tuners you are using, how many and other information that helps us with support situations. It's also helpful to know how many users are using single tuner verse multi-tuners and how many are using SD vs. HD when making decisions about future features for the product.

As far as show information, this is housed locally on your PC in the Wiz database and that information is not sent back to us so we can't tell how many of you enjoy a late night program on Cinemax compared to those of you that enjoy the occasional episode of Barney. If we ever did any tracking or reporting we would definitely notify you and this would be considered a major change to our privacy policy.

Hope that helps.
Dan

You're right-I forgot about the hardware info for support purposes. My bad. But no personal info. I was trying to alleviate the paranoia that floats around when this topic is discussed. Another app has a feature where you can opt in and share your watching habits with everyone and see what is most popular for recordings, etc. Nothing like that here either.

Same here. I just wanted to go ahead and post what is actually collected before someone read the FAQ or Privacy statement in an attempt to confirm or disprove what you said. We all know that can lead to some wild speculation at times. I'd hate for you to be accused of trying "cover up" Sage's evil master plan of offering great software as a cover for secretly collect data about our HTPC configurations.

That only applies to digital broadcasts. With the exception of OTA Digital (caries PSIP with EPG info), there's no way to retrieve that info as there's no interface cards supporting digital recording of cable/sat in the US (QAM is very limited in it's functionality).

Sage parses EPG info from PSIP for OTA digital channels.
