SageTV HD -- TS or PS MPEG files?

Can someone clarify for me if SageTV when recording HD material -- are the files saved in TS (transport stream) format or PS (program stream) format. Is there a way to set the program to change between the two formats?

I set up an HDHomeRun yesterday. My HD recordings from that are .ts files. However, I think I remember seeing that there is an option in the properties file to change this. HTH

Aloha,

Looking at the file properties in VideoRedo, it looks like OTA captures are PS and DirecTV R5000 captures are TS (on my system at least). So maybe it's up to the capture device to decide which format to use.

Look in Sage.properties or SageClient.properties, find the line:

mmc/encode_digital_tv_as_program_stream=true

If set to false, it will record to Transport Stream instead of Program Stream.

Any advantage to one format over the other?

I found that the TS files SageTV records are somewhat non-standard because Sage strips out subchannels but apparently doesn't update the embedded metadata to reflect that, and so some applications have problems with the files (MPEG2Repair doesn't seem to like TS files from SageTV if the channel you recorded is multicasting, and TheaterTek can't play them). Also the program stream files are slightly smaller, I think because null packets are stripped out.

I was recording program stream for a while with my VBOX 150 tuners, but when I installed the HDHomeRun it changed the properties file setting back to recording TS files. I'm not sure if they had a good reason for doing that or not, so I've just left it be for now.

TS file playback

How good is the SageTV playback of High def TS files -- on earlier versions (2.x) it was a mess.

Depends on if the video stream is MPEG2 or H.264.

MPEG2 should work fine, H.264 does not. There is rumor that 6.1 will bring better H.264 support though.
