Quick license question.

I have just upgraded to v6 from v4.0. I have one server license and 2 client licenses. I had been using one computer as a server, another as an HTPC running as a client and an Hauppage MediaMVP also running as a client, using MVP Client for SageTV V1.3.0.
When I wrote to Sage describing my setup before purchasing the upgrade, they said that I would only have to pay $39.99 for the server upgrade. The HTPC upgrade worked fine but my Media MVP now says it's a trial and my old MVP client directory was wiped out in the install.
Before I spend a lot of time wrasslin' with the new software, I'd like to know if can I use my SageTV client license for the MVP or do I need to buy a extender license?

The "MVP Client for SageTV V1.3.0" mode was before Sage installed native support for the MVP. Yes, in order to get Sage to run the MVP, you will need to buy an extender license. One benefit of the extender license, it doubles as a placeshifter license so you can use the placeshifter client over the internet. Just turn off the MVP if you want to use the placeshifter.

Thanks for the quick response.

That's what I thought. Despite the fact that I think SageTV is pretty much the coolest thing since sliced bread, I'm a little annoyed because I had sent an email to Sage describing my setup and they told me that all I would have to do was buy the server upgrade. I have some vague recollection of being able to trade in client licenses for extender licenses. Is that still possible?

No, trade-ins was a while back, and no longer available.
Looking at you list of licenses, it may be possible to run your MVP on you second client license that it sounds like you aren't using. You list 2 client licenses, but only 1 client PC. If you set up a second client PC, you may be able to run the "MVP client" software on it. The main thing that changed was that people were running multiple copies of the client software on a PC, to run multipe MVP's, on a single license. That changed when 4.1 came out. So, it may still be possible to run the MVP off a second client.

But if you run the MVP off the server with a extender license, it will be faster. All the UI is done inside the MVP natively, instead of being done on the client, and then sent to the MVP.

The party line on license upgrades has been, to upgrade to V6 from a pre-V5 license is that you only have to upgrade the Server license, all other licenses are still good to go. I could see them easily missing the fact that you were using your MVP in a non-supported method, and a method that has been "obsolete" for around a year. And if I get your post right, you still may be able to run the MVP with your existing licensing. It may take a third PC, but the licensing is there.

As ke6guj suggested, I'm sure they thought you already had an extender license due to your use of the MVP & the fact that existing extender licenses do not need an upgrade key to work with v6.

That was a limited time offer which is long gone.

Thanks, I'll just order an Extender license and have done with it. I have another PC that I can use the client license for anyways.
