anther newbi confused with question need some help
all,
I have some question. As I am using sage TV for first time. Installation is done; recording and live TV is working. I have Basic basic analog cable service (10.99 one you get with Internet cable) from Comcast. Here is what I need to know My current setup is Cable in House ->Cable Box (Jerold basic cables box no card) -> to PC/ TV tuner card -> to TV (via sVideo) Cable box is the one where I need to change the channel currently I do that using IR Blaster. Now the card is PVR 150 dose it support direct connection ( i.e Cable in House -> to PC/ TV tuner card -> to TV (via sVideo)) and tunes the cable channels. (No I am not looking for free channels) .Basic cable provided all of the OTA channels via cable. And that’s what I need. Second question is once I have Sage records the show I want to run a package which can mark the commercials, remove them, give me MPEG coded commercial free file, and convert this file in to DIX ,XVID codec( high quality is important) I am used to cutting, joining, re-encoding video files. But after reading on most of the add-on written by sage community I am between comskip, show analyizer, video redo, dir mon. in other term I want to find out which add on should I use if I want the following Record the show via SAGE, have the Ad’s free MPEG, and then convert it in to compressed file but make it still available in SAGE UI under any video section. Get this entire thing done automatically while PC is not being used (scheduled). I don’t mind if its shareware, donsware, free or paid Thanks and sorry about going on and on

PVR-150's have a tuner built in. If all you are interested in are the analog channels, then you don't need a cable box; just plug the cable directly from the wall to the card.
As for comskip, others should be able to give you better advice. Stu |

I tried both comskip and show analyzer and would strongly recomend show analyzer. It used much less system resources, works faster, and runs while the show records (so can skip comercial while watching time shifted TV). I have heard that comskip is being re-designed to improve it, but I have had show analyzer for 6-months and it works great. I monkeyed with the setting when I first got it (changed min comercial and show segment limits to work better with football), and havn't touched it since.

I use Dirmon + showanalyzer now with the Sage commercial skip plug-in. This automatically scans the MPEGs, marks commercials, and then plays them back with the detected commercials skipped.
For awhile, I had also used video redo. This would take the commercials (from the above process) and snip them out of the file. The final file could be watched in sage through the regular UI. I never did any compression, but using Dirmon, you certainly could get another script to run which would compress the file. Again, I haven't done this, so I can't speak to viewing the file in Sage UI vs in imported file. Matt PS the forums over at http://www.dragonglobal.org/forums/ have good info on this.

For me comskip was much more accurate especially when running it on shows that were still recording. This was with no tweaking where as with SA I had to spend a good bit of time tweaking and it still wasn't as accurate. I haven't tried SA in quite some time, but there used to be a big difference in accuracy when running it on shows in progress vs completed recordings. Obviously on in progress recordings the results won't be as accurate because the program doesn't have the entire file to compare against. This didn't bother me when watching it "live", but I really hated the poor results when I watched the shows later. With comskip this wasn't an issue because once it was finished recording comskip would do a quick check against the completed file and would update the edl file if any corrections were needed so the final edl file was exactly the same whether it was run on a completed recording or one in progress. With SA there was always a difference in accuracy when processing as they recorded vs completed recordings so apparently it wasn't doing that extra little check. That was a long time ago so SA may do the check now, but it's something to check into if you're planning to process in progress recordings. I really don't think there is all that much difference between the two. SA has a gui and a few nice features, but it costs a little $$ (it's worth it IMO if it works better for you than comskip) where as comskip doesn't have a gui or the extra features and is free. You can download comskip monitor (prepackaged with comskip) here:
http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/down...do=file&id=138 And the thread for it is here: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20358 If you are using the default STV, you will also need the Comskip Playback STVi (I believe, haven't used the default STV in a while). The thread for that is here: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21515 Good luck! |
