Extend the IR receiver on an MVP
Hello,
I am preparing to install a 15" LCD monitor/TV in the kitchen that will be fed by an MVP. I was hoping to place all the hardware inside a cabinet. Now the question - I was hoping to extend the IR receiver from the MVP by placing an external IR receiver on the monitor and wiring it back to the MVP. Has anyone done this ? Does anyone know how I should go about this ? What IR receiver should I purchase and should I wire it in parallel or in line with the internal IR receive in the MVP ? Any help would be appreciated Thanks. |

My wife is nuts about hiding the AV equipment; I have all my stuff stored in a cabinet and driven by an RF-to-IR converter. This is the one I use (with the triple eye attachment):

I use a $45 device that receives IR, converts it to a voltage pulse stream, and sends that via the TV coax to a mating device. That device converts it back to IR. For me, this allows the IR remotes to be used adjacent to the TV/DVD, etc, and the same IR is reproduced remotely (garage, where servers are). You can do the same thing with a pair of wires instead of TV coax, using different but similar products. Quite a few vendors for this. AutomatedOutlet.com has a selection. |

Do you just put a RF transmitter in place of one of the batteries in your remote, and then its a RF remote ? I'm not sure i understand completely. |

That's exactly what I did; I have only two minor gripes with the unit:
1. There's no way to tell when the transmitter battery is dying. The remote starts acting flaky, and you know it's time to switch out the RF transmitter/battery. The unit comes with two rechargeable ones. 2. I have a scientific atlanta cable box, and the IR codes are incompatible with the IR codes with everything else I have. Although this unit allows you to switch between IR frequencies, everything being controlled by the remote has to be on the same frequency. I ended up having to buy an IR eye for my cable box, but I control the MVP, DVD player, and AV receiver through RF-to-IR. Does that make sense? Overall, it's been worth the $40 I paid for it. I think stevech's solution is also worth looking into; if he's reading this thread, perhaps he can post a direct link to the equipment he's using. Stu |
