OT: Windows XP Pro specific questions

Hi,

I don't really know a lot about Windows networking, so maybe someone is able to shed some light on this for me: I have three computers in my Home network running Windows XP Home, and upgraded one of them to Windows XP Pro. All machines are member of the 'MSHOME' workgroup.

My first question is: I enabed the Remote Desktop connections in the System properties, and verified that the Terminal Services are started in the services panel, but I can't establish a remote desktop connection from any of the other machines. When I browse for a RD server, I only get 'The MSHOME domain/workgroup does not contain any Terminal servers'... Do I have to configure anything else for this ?

Second question: I would like to use NTFS permissions to shared folder on that machine instead of simple filesharing. But in the 'Security' properties I can only add users or groups from the current location (the XP Pro machine), but not from the other machines in the workgroup. So is it only possible to do this if the other computers in the workgroup are also running XP Pro ?

Thanks,

Dirk

You need to go to Tools->Folder Options->View. And way at the bottom, uncheck "simple" file sharing.

As for remote desktop, I've never tried browsing (well I just did and it doesn't work) I just type in the name of the PC I want to RD to.

Hi Flashbar,
Did you allow RD in Windows Firewall in each machine?

You mean on the XP Pro machine, right ? Yeah, I did that (otherwise the "Security" tab won't even be available). But now in the Security tab I want to add a user from one of the other machines, so that I can grant him (and only him) rights to access this folder. But when I bring up the 'Add' dialog, the only location I can choose from is the current (XP Pro) machine, and none of the others, so I can't specify any non-local user account. I suspect that this might only be possible if the other machine is running XP Pro too, but it would be great if someone could confirm this...

Doh, I never tried just typing in the name of the PC, and it works indeed
Thanks !

Yeah, I already checked that, and it turned out to be a 'user error' (see above)

But thanks anyway !

Doesn't this function require the computers to be in a domain an therefor the XPHome computers wouldn't show up since they cannot be in a domain? Just asking because I would like to know too.

Ah, you need to create an account on the local PC for that remote user.

And yes, I don't think it's possible for XP Home to log on as a user, but I'm not sure. One of the reasons I hate Home with a passion. "Simple" my butt.

AFAIK, in a workgroup network, you can only add local accounts, so for whatever user on the other machines you want to add, you just recreate the same account on the local machine you are sharing.
