Upgrade (v2.2->v6) advice request

I am a relative newbie at this and took the plunge constructing a TV box.
I have a SageTv Box That has been running for some time.
This computer is dedicated to the TV only.
The particulars:
Celeron 2.0GHz w/ 512M RAM
2 - 250G HDs (mostly full)
Hauppauge PVR-500 card (dual tuners)
GeForce FX 5200 (for TV-Out)
USB-UIRT infared receiver
Kameleon 8 URC-9960 Remote Control
[no DVD burner as yet, I move files to my regular machine and burn]

The recent email from SageTV really got me thinking. They are offering a $30 upgrade from v2.2 to v6 until Jan. 15, 2007. After that, I suppose the $80 price takes over.

Should I go this route? Is the upgrade mostly painless? (I have side-stepped the upgrades so far because I don't want to chance messing up and missing an episode of <whatever>.)

Should I forget that and cough up the $80 and go with the Linux based system?? Is there a way to preserve the "watched program" database, favorites, etc. for the Linux upgrade path?

Should I hang a DVD drive on the box before upgrading?

It reverts to $40 for the upgrade price. $80 would be for a new server license.

Thanks for the clarification, dblaine2.

Thanks for the feedback Walter, I am considering that the same will be true of v6.
