ver 6 whats next

Sigh, Im kinda disapointed, I really started out with v6, So for me all the cool new features are the old features I cant think of what it would be, But sage needs to ad something cool and new in there next release just for me and those who are like me

Keep up the good work though....

V6 has really been rock solid for the most part for me.

There are LOTS of features that I would like to see. Don't get me wrong; I love Sage but as a developer myself, there are always new features users would like to see. For one thing, I would love to see parental controls on the imported videos. That's just one of several things I can think of off hand.

One feature would be the ability to handle multiple users. For a family environment each user really needs to be able to setup their own favorites. Currently if auto delete is used the watch flag will need to be cleared by the first person and the last person to watch must know to leave it as watched. If you are doing manual delete you still have no way of knowing if everyone else in the family who considers it a favorite has watched it yet. I do not really need the feature, but I could see how it would benefit homes with multiple users who do not always watch their favorite shows together. Basically each user would have their own list of recordings and a way for Sage to know when all the users who wish to watch a program have seen it so that it can be deleted.

Of course there is still support for a HD extender.

Sorry Mike, Parental controls, I am sure are valuable for others and some day for me, however my kids are to young for me to worry about that currently, And my wife actually feels when setup they get in the way and annoy her, and as many know what the wife say usually goes, lol.

Blade, Thats one of those features that I didnt realize I wanted, But now that you mention it, That would just be an absolutly outstanding feature, Thanks, Give me something else to want.

I could see blades feature and mike feature tied into together and make it so that shows und parental control recorded from a specific receiver couldn't even be seen unless you entered a password of some kind

Media and Music section updates to utilize databases that would allow for important of any type of information we wanted.

Basically, revamp of the Media/music section to be a full featured media center that beats the socks off Meedio and Mediaportal in these two areas.

Hopefully Sage will get this damned runaway version number thing under control. I started with SageTV 2. SageTV 3 was skipped and renamed SageTV 4. SageTV 5 followed shortly thereafter and was just SageTV 4 with official PlaceShifter support. SageTV 5.1 was supposed to fix all the bugs in SageTV 5, but it was simply renamed SageTV 6.

SageTV by any other version number would still smell as sweet...

But seriously, I just had to explain to my wife again that SageTV still doesn't support playing audio CD's directly...

My wishlist:

- Better integration of the compression feature. It should support H.264. You should be able to automatically compress a recording a la BTV.

- HD extender.

- Built in support for internet radio. I really like the SlimPlayer plug-in (now that I figured out how to use it!) but would prefer if it were built-in.

- Better "administration" features. I'd like to be able to stop all recordings. I'd like to be able to physically move recordings from one drive to another. I'd like to be able to edit the recording details and info.

You have got to be kidding me - V6 doesn't include a CD player yet? What in the world is going on at SageHQ? I've been a user since v3, and this has to be the longest running feature request, and I can see absolutely no reason for it. CD players are dead simple anymore.

For those requesting for HD extenders, what are the reason for getting a dedicated HD client over something like a Mac mini? With the ability to run Windows on it and it has hardware power to playback at least 1080i, plus DVI out, I think it makes a decent client. And its smaller and better looking than anything else out there. Is it just price factor as in hoping for an inexpensive HD extender maybe in the sub $300 range?

As for feature requests in SageTV, there are many things requested before that hasn't been implemented. So its a long list still, some of those items were answered in v6, but most were not. Here's mine wish list:

-Multi-User support, this plays into parental control as discussed above. Maybe a SageTV Distribution Server Edition, optimized for large numbers of tuners and connected clients, customizable as much as possible.
-Stop recording of anything immediatly on command. Not have to wait for watched or don't like status to kick in.
-Live TV only dedicated tuner support, meaning no recording whatsoever, for those who like to channel surf. Plus it'll ease the transition for average TV user into the PVR experience.
-Sports mode for favorites. This means always record first scheduled airing, not later re-airing of the same game. Some games, both the first airing and re-airing are marked as both "First-Run" so SageTV can't really differenciate. Also add a default padding of 30 minute or so for overtime scenarios, and option for padding to override conflicts or not.
-Picture in Picture. This is somewhat related to Sports mode as in swapping between two live games. Not sure if its possible for any system to playback two simultaneous HD streams though, maybe PiP for SD content only.
-I like to see more online services, such as YouTube, Apple movie trailers, web browser, etc. (these can be third party plugins though)
-DVD burning built-in
-Bookmarks for google videos or other online content, should implement with multi-user feature mentioned above.

For me PQ, silence, cost, appearance, and power consumption in that order. Honestly if a HD extender was much over $200 I wouldn't be all that interested.

I've never looked at the mac mini, but my first question is how good is the PQ? If it isn't on par with what Nvidia offers then that alone would rule it out for me. Of course that means bad edit detection and IVTC is a must.

No contest... the Mac Mini has an Intel GMA950 video system. It's even weaker than the Radeon Xpress 200 IGP chipset (which is based on a halved-X300). HDTV playback on that chip would be a slideshow at best.

If that's the case I think I'd rather build a low end PC with a 6200 or even a 6150 before going with a mac mini.

Well the Mac Mini is only an example. But you can probably build a mini PC with slightly better hardware and for less, probably not below $300, but it is a full PC after all, not just a playback device. As for picture quality, is it that terrible with something like an nvidia 6 series?

Out of topic but I 've got to ask!

I am thinking along these lines but the closest I 've found to resemble the Mac-mini case an an Aopen cube with a built-in mobo that is not very exciting and future proof for h.264 playback.

Can anyone suggest a slim, small footprint case?

Here's one I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned...

Now that Sage has the ability to convert videos to MPEG4, how about a way to do it automatically (like a setting in favorites)?
