Is wMCP really that sensitive to network speed?

Just bought the Hauppauge wMVP.
Got it working just fine when it sits right next to my wireless router (Linksys WRT54G) but when I take it upstairs, network signal seems to drop to a point where the MVP doesn't even start up right.
SOmetimes it gets to the 'SageTV MC is booting up' page but stays there forever.
In the setup menu, it sees the network but only very weakly.
My laptop right next to it has 54MBit???

When I ping the MVP it replies just fine, until it gets to the 'booting up' screen.
It just times out. When it does but up it is totally useless as it doesn't even respond to the remote, let alone plau any video.

What'up with these wMVPs?? Is the receiver that bad? My network can't be that bad, can it?
