Haupauge MediaMVP blew up
Well, not quite but close to it. Lately my network had been causing my MVP to freeze intermittantly. Normally, I simply power down the mvp by unplugging it and replug. This time, I got more than I bargained for!
Smoke and a bad odour was released and the MVP went dead. The warranty is up and I decided I'd open it up and fix it myself. I immediately saw the melted transistor. Unfortunately, its impossible to identify in its molten state. Does anyone have this MediaMVP : The old 1000 series using Cat5 ethernet wire Model: 86019 Rev H2 Lot 1506 (or close to it?) If you do, can you unplug it and remove the four screws from the underside- the top comes off very easily. There is a small square transistor near the LEFT edge towards the BACK Hear is an image Do you see the red circled transistor? All I can make out on mine is it ends in '38' and has a marking of KP on it. Can someone check for me so that I can buy the proper part? I need the full part # for that transistor. Its really easy to take the cover of the MVP, so no danger there. Thanks in advance. Last edited by roxy99; 12-08-2006 at 01:26 PM. |

Actually, you have the new style MVP, not the old style one. Your's has the SPDIF output and the connector for the wireless card.
That said, my older MVP looks like it has the same transistor. It says: K P 3 8 * * is some sort of logo, looks like 2 circles set at 90*, or like a planet with rings. |

Thanks ke6gui for taking the trouble- I appreciate it. I can't seem to find the part online. Looks like I'm going to buy a new MVP. When replacing the MVP, do I need to update anything in my clients folder? Do I need to re-enter the MVP license number or is it plug and play since its already set up. |

Likely there's more at fault than this one transistor.

Good news, just got off the phone with tech support- 2 year warranty on Haupauge. Within 5-10 days I should have my unit repaired, only the cost of shipping!

The only customization I've imported to the Sage MVP was the comskip plugin. Your .my plugin, (I had imported in the Sage server and was just getting around to doing it for the MVP) was not imported to the MVP before it blew. So doing what you say will save me from redoing all my customizations (I just have comskip) but my license # will be intact for the new MVP? PS - running Sage 5.0.04 |

Yes, the license is no problem. In fact you can run multiple MVPs with only one license, but one only at a time can connect to the server. The license is not bound to any specific MVP. As for customizations. Certain settings are specific to the MVP. Things like the overscan settings, fast forward/rewind times, the STV it uses (and its settings).

Just wanted to update you and pay testimony to Hauppauge's excellent customer support. Within 5 days of shipping my MVP, I received a replacement under the terms of the warranty. I even have an extra remote and A/V wires.
As mentioned, Sage recongnized the MVP once again with no reconfiguration needed. Thanks all. |

Hauppauge does have excellent support. They often take their products back without question.
Also in the future, if something fries, there is often a deeper underlying problem then the part that fried.

It's probably more accurate to say they have good support once enough people have complained to force them into taking action to correct the problem. |

Plus on the bright side, at least they are taking them back. Some companies won't even do that.
