Zune - transcoding video
Ok, I've learned a little bit more about how the Zune and the Zune Software coexist and which formats are supported.
Ideally, video would need to be converted to the following format. This is the only format that the Zune supports natively. -------------------------------------------------------- Format: Windows Media Video (.wmv) Video codec: Windows Media Video 9 (Simple, Main, and Advanced Profiles), Windows Media Video 9 Screen, Windows Media Video 9 Image Version 2, Windows Media Video 9 VCM. Video resolution: up to 320x240 (QVGA) or 320x180 (16:9 QVGA) Maximum video bit rate: 500 Kbps (recommended for the best balance of optimal battery life and video quality) up to 1.5 Mbps Video peak bit rate: up to 1.5 Mbps Complexity or profile: Main profile, VBR Audio codec: Windows Media Audio (.wma) Maximum audio bit rate: WMA Standard, CBR, 128 Kbps (recommended), up to 192 Kbps, Stereo, 44.1 kHz Maximum total bit rate: 1.692 Mbps, 1.5 Mbps for peak video plus 192 Kbps for audio -------------------------------------------------------- However, the Zune software will take the following formats and convert them to WMV before transferring them to the Zune. -------------------------------------------------------- Windows Media Video (.wmv) - all bit rates and resolutions MPEG4 (.mp4, .m4v, .mov) - Simple profile, all bit rates and resolutions H.264 (.mp4, .m4v, .mov) - Baseline and Main profiles, all bit rates and resolutions -------------------------------------------------------- I've successfully converted video to H.264 and then had the Zune software convert it to WMV, and it looks/sounds great on the Zune. But, as you can imagine, converting a MPG to one of the supported formats and then having the Zune software convert that to WMV seems like a waste of time. I've tried using Windows Media Encoder 9 to encode to WMV directly, but that program is horrific. Anyone have any suggestions of other programs that will create a WMV? EDIT: Oh, meant to ask if anyone knew the settings for the SageTVTranscoder to create a WMV. I've tried many combinations, but none seem to work. BTW, as far as I can tell, the Zune software DRMs the converted video and deletes it from the Zune when it expires. Regards, Wade Last edited by Wade; 11-23-2006 at 09:31 PM.

The biggest issue is that you need to write DRM'd files for it to work on Zune AFAIK. If its like the hoops you have to go through to just play DRM'd files I imagine it would be quite expensive as well as irritating to pull off.

Not that I suggest one player over another (Zune vs Zen vs iPod etc) ... but I've had no issues converting files using the ImTOO software (http://www.imtoo.com/dvd-to-zune-converter.html) --- of course, it will depend on what format you start with for the source, but their software is pretty stinkin' good here.

Just got a Zune so I'll have to try to do some encoding. I think I'm going to start with AutoMKV. There is really good tutorial on videohelp.com. I don't really want to have to buy a $30 shareware program do it.

Well so far I haven't had a lot of luck. I've been able to convert various divx files to WMV using a front end called SUPER, and that worked good, but it errors part of the way through on a 1 hour MPEG-TS file. Same thing with MEncoder264. In both of those front ends I get zero information on what the real error was, so it's impossible to troubleshoot. I just tried imtoo, (which is cripple-ware so I can only encode the first 5 minutes (what a joke)), and that error'd out too (again with no actual error message).
I remember an issue a while back where other programs had issues with TS files that were created by Sage. I thought that was fixed. Anyone know of a way to check the TS file to make sure it isn't corrupted? flips

I never did get the Zune working quite perfect. In the end, I opted to exchange it for a PSP instead. Granted, I no longer have 30gb of storage space, however the 2gb I do have is more than enough for 5-6 1 hr recordings at "good" quality, or 2 recordings at "high" quality.
