FSE with Sage sleeping

Is it possible for Sage to release FSE when it is sleeping in the tray? I am no programmer, but it seems to me that if an application is not even using the screen it doesn't need to be exclusive with it.

It does as far as I know...

Unless perhaps, you're using the screensaver.

I am not using the screen saver. But when I sleep Sage, no other app can use DX9 as the renderer. I either get errors or just a blank screen with sound.

Well Sage definitely gives up FSE, otherwise, no ther apps would run (right). But that might be bugworthy, doesn't sound right.

I guess so....I have no clue. I'll go ahead and report it then. I wasn't sure if it was really a bug or a 'feature'. I'll test again before I report it though to make sure I am not imagining things.

I've run into a similar issue that I guess deserves more looking into it. If I set SageTV to FSE, then take it out of full-screen, then sleep it to the tray, no games will launch. I've tried this with HL2, Doom3 and FEAR.

If I disable FSE, then go through the same process, games launch fine.

to be honest, I haven't really looked into this, so I'll post more info tonight. Might be a bug.

I think it is the same issue I am having. Even though it is asleep in the tray it is still tying up something.

If you can reproduce it reliably, mention it to SageTV to see if something isn't getting released.

BTW -- what is the value for this property: ui/unload_3d_on_sleep? I don't really know exactly what that does, or if it is still in use since I have some dead properties left over from past stuff, but it sounded like something to check.

I didn't get a chance to test any more tonight (Heroes!!!). But my setting is set to true:

Code:
ui/unload_3d_on_sleep=true
Is that good?

More testing will be done Wednesday as I should have the day off....maybe...

Hmm I must've missed the email about more posts to this thread...anyways..
I just tested again with sage 6.0.15, if Sage is using FSE and is 'sleeping' in the tray no other app can use dx9 rendering. Without FSE other apps can use DX9, but of course then I get tearing in Sage. My sage.propertes has 'ui/unload_3d_on_sleep=true'.
Might be time for a bug report.

Well I submitted a bug report then all of a sudden it started to work just fine....until last night. I did some testing and now I can replicate it quite easily. Here is what I found out (using Sage 6.0.15):
Launch Sage->play video->sleep -DX9 is released properly.
Launch Sage->sleep without playing any video -DX9 is not released properly.
Wake Sage->sleep without playing any video -DX9 is not released properly.
Once Sage has failed to release DX9 properly, not matter how many times you may wake it play a video then sleep it again, DX9 will fail to release properly.
Can anyone else having DX9 issues with Sage sleeping try this out?

I just tested on another PC and got the same results. Anyone else willing to test it out?

Similar Issue with Launching Movies From Sage into TheaterTek

I have been trying to use SageMC video library to launch my movie collection to play on TheaterTek. I've one machine using overlay in Sage and FSE vmr9 in TT, and this works flawlessly. However, on my main system, I use FSE/vmr9 in both programs. I have to completely close Sage before TT will play. If I don't, I will get the audio in TT, but only a black full screen with a pink video window on top. This seams to be the same issue.

Try my steps above and see what happens.

I tried your steps, but they had no effect. However, upgrading my DX9 build to the latest cured the problem.

EDIT: Futher investigation shows problem is NOT fixed.

You did what? Upgraded DX9? From what version to what version?
So you started Sage, then played a video before sleeping it, and your other DX9 apps still didnt work?

Before the upgrade, I played a Sage Video, then attempted to launch a movie in TheaterTek, and got an error.

Then, I went to:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx
, clicked on the "Get Latest Direct X Here" link, validated my XP install, and then downloaded the direct X version published 10/10/06. After I installed, I restarted, and I was able to use Sage in vmr9 FSE and launch movies from Sage into TheaterTek which is also using vmr9 FSE. The update to DX9 did the trick. Hopefully, this would work for you too!!

EDIT: Further investigation showed problem is NOT fixed.

I am having the same results as kricker and I have the latest DX9. If I play video in Sage before I put it to sleep, then other FSE applications will work. But if I put Sage to sleep before playing any video, then no other FSE applications will work.

Hope they fix this one soon.

The problem is not fixed

I spoke too soon.

I have two machines. One has an ATI card that I typically run in overlay. After installing the new DX9, I tried FSE in both Sage and TheaterTek on that machine, and they both worked. HOWEVER, my main movie machine has a NVidia 6600. I had the chance tonight to install the new DX9 on this machine, and I still get a pink screen when I try to play movies in TT. (I've tried starting video in Sage first, but not dice.)

Are you sure that ATI was in DX9 FSE in Sage? You need to set it to DX9 FSE, then exit sage (not just sleep) then restart Sage for FSE to take effect.
