Client/server software

I am new to sagetv and so far i am very impressed. But i was wondering is there an option or a way to create an option that on the server side i have access to all menus, but on the client side, either via pc software or via extender, that I can only see menus i want the client to see. For example on the client side i would not necassarily want them to get into the setup option so they can change items.

If anyone can help me out, that would be great

The easiest way to do this woud be to use nielm's dynamic menus on the client. You can either completely remove the menu items you dont want to appear, or set PIN codes for accessing them. See this for details

Where is the info on how to add pin codes? I did not see that anywhere.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

just bring up the options menu for the dynamic menus, 'Set Pin Code' is under the 'Edit Menu Item' settings ...

Wouldn't this require creating and maintaining separate STV (XML) files for each device?

I copied the standard STV file to a backup file called "STVwork.xml" and then loaded it from the server. I tweaked and imported all Plugins, made menu tweaks, and when I was satisfied, I saved it and using Windows Explorer, I copied it to "STVClean.xml". (The filenames are irrelevant--just keep things organized.)

Next, I copied "STVClean.xml" to "STV_MVP_Work.xml", loaded it in MVP, made any MVP-specific tweaks, and saved the file. For brevity, I then copied it to "MVP.xml" and loaded "MVP.xml" into the MVP.

Next, I copied "STVClean.xml" to "STV_PShift_Work.xml", loaded it in Place Shifter, made any Place Shifter-specific tweaks, and saved the file. For brevity, I then copied it to "PShift.xml" and loaded "PShift.xml" into PlaceShifter.

Finally, I copied "STVClean.xml" to "MediaCtr.xml", and loaded it in the Server.

I then deleted all the "work" files and was left with

MediaCtr.xml
MVP.xml
PShift.xml

this way I can completely control and tailor each client as I choose. The down side to this is that if I have any "global" changes to make, I have to change them on ALL .xml files.
