Sage freezes after about 2hrs of running
after about 2hrs of watching tv (watching the mommy for example) sage starts to freeze every 10-15 seconds and lasts for about 2 or 3 seconds. then plays ... freezes ... plays .... freezes.
i looked at the recordings folder to see that the mommy was recording and was 3 gbs. I did not ask it to record. even closing sage and starting it up made no change. i had to reboot the pvr. now everything is fine .... but i suspect in a couple hours i will have the same issue. Does it record everything all the time, and archinve the ones you actually tell it to record?. if so can i turn that off?. i only want it to start to record when i hit the pause button. my machine is a dedicated pvr box. P4 2.4ghz 1gb ram 256mb Gforce4 VC Hauppage 350. 160gb IDE thanks. .... hope that made sense. |

I am guessing you are using Jave JRE 1.5.0_06 right? If so there is a known problem with the version of java and SageTV. Try using a different version like 1.4.2_12 or the nighly builds 1.6_??.

Have you tried using the video card's output instead of the 350's TV-out?

maybe .. but here is something wierd. i setup vnc on my pvr machine so i could log in via another machine at home and check things, do updates, read logs etc etc. i launched sagetv, started watching tv and left my vnc connection running ..... and it has been working now for about 1.5hrs with no issues. does sagetv have a problem with wireless networks? it isnot recording to a network share or anything but it is using a wireless network for accessin the guid updates and such. while the vnc connection is connected, the wireless nic is always in use and thus far has made it work a little longer. it has yet to freeze. i wonder if it is related to the wireless nic. |

Make sure your NIC isn't set to go to sleep if not in use. I think it's in device manager under Power management for the NIC.

yup checked that last night and the settings are all good. but i think my theory on wireless is out the door. last night i changed my desktop resolution to 1280x1024 from 800x600 and disconnected from vnc. it ran fine until around 11pm when i shut it down and went to bed. no hiccups at all. could it be res related?. now sagetv is comming out of the pvr card (hauppage) not my VC. so they shouldnt really be related, unless the app doesnt like running on that low of a rez. i have another svideo cable with me now, so i can try the output on my VC i am just worried taht it is not going to show full screen like it should. on my pc when i tell sagetv to run in full screen mode, it flashes full screen then goes back to a little window. on the TV it is full screen but not on my pc. if i plug in my vc as teh output to tv i hope it shows full screen as i dont want to see windows in the background. will let you know how it works. While using the 350 for TV out, you won't be able to change the size of the SageTV window, including making it go full screen.
Once you disable the 350's TV-out in Detailed Setup -> Multimedia, you'll be able to resize the SageTV window. If not, restart SageTV. - Andy

from one problem to the next.
i have now attached an svideo cable to my videocard and have setup sage to push tv out that way. seems fine. however now i have no audio. ugh. might have i done something wrong? lol back to the drawing board. |

interesting, when i set Sage to push tv via svideo on the VC it forced audio out the Computers Sound card. so i had to change that as well.
all working now. hopefully the laggy and freezing goes away. i was forced to find an alternative incase this doesnt get better, so BTV is running as well. i will let the wife play with then and see which she like best. V. |

While I do not have a 350, most users who started using that, have given up. It just is too buggy and overheats (from the posts I have seen). You see that most users use hauppauge 150s or 500s (or some of the other options out there as there seem to be better). The video out is just too buggy and yes if you are using your video out on your card, you have to use the computer sound card (as Sage is now bipassing the 350). With your specs, you shouldn't have any problems playing SDTV. Let us know if it works better now.
