Nvidia PureVideo - Can't access icon

I have my default decoder video and audio set to PureVideo but when I play videos out of Sage I don't see the nvidia icon on the taskbar. I've used the DecCheck program to make sure it is the default decoder but it still does not work.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mike.

Play one of the mpegs from SageTV in Windows Media Player. The icon will appear and can be accessed. The icon is not available while SageTV is playing video. Don't know why.

If you set your decoder to be Default in SageTV the icon will show. That's assuming PureVideo is your default decoder. If you set your decoder to PureVideo, it won't show.. go figure.

Okay that worked. Another quesiton - In another thread they were talking about a Noise Reduction and Sharpness feature in the decoder. I can't find it and I have the latest version 1.02-223 installed. I'm also wondering what settings others use? I'm assuming most have SD and not HD even with large TV's. I have a 46" LCD and I'm trying to make it look as good as possible.

Thanks,
Mike

They are in the new forceware graphics control panel when using the latest nvidia drivers. I found they added too much ringing (sharpness) and spatial blur (noise reduction) to use even at low settings. But that's just me.

Aloha,
Mike

But strangely, if you select nVidia Post Processor (CPU-based) in Sage, you see the PureVideo icon in the taskbar.

In my case I select NVidia Purevideo Decoder in SageTV, not Default and the taskbat icon appears. I cannot however open the Purevideo control panel from it. The only way to get to the control panel is through Radflight Filter Manager......

Go figure....

whats more annoying is getting it to work now, and when you inevitably rebuild your system, there are so many little tweaks that you just can't quite remember.....

I have purchased purevideo decoder and installed it... I have the latest version.

I do not see it as an option in Sage.. I do see "Nvidia video decoder" and "Nvidia post processer decoder", but no "nvidia purevideo decoder"

I ran media player and the icon popped up. The icon says Nvidia video decoder and about gives me a version 4020.233...

I donwloaded the microsoft decoder utility that Identifies all of my decoders and the purvideo decoder I have installed does not show up...but an nvidia video decoder does at version 4020.233...Could I have an old decoder that purevideo won't over write or something?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Gary

That is the "purevideo" decoder. You should choose Nvidia video decoder, if you choose Post processor you'll be using software mode instead of hardware.

But, I upgraded from my old version of purevideo to the latest version and the version number didn't change...the decoder is showing version 4.02-223 and the purevideo version I downloaded and installed is labeled 1.02.223 and nowhere does it say anything about purevideo...

I'm confused.

Where are you expecting it to say purevideo? I have never seen anything in the decoder that actually says purevideo. It's nothing more than a marketing term that covers an array of various hardware and software features. Also 4.02-233 is the latest version.

Isn't marketing great. Take a look at the following for more information http://www.htpcnews.com/forums/index...howtopic=20763

Some of the stuff mentioned in that post doesn't sound exactly right to me. For example you don't have to use Nvidia Post Processing in order to take advantage of bad edit correction and the other features mentioned.

Basically the Nvidia cards can do numerous features in hardware. Not all cards are capable of performing all of the features in hardware. My understanding is those that can't do it in hardware still do some of the features, but in software instead.

Using Nvidia Post Processing instead of Nvidia video decoder does all of the work in software.

I highly recommend using an imaging program. My favorite is Acronis TrueImage. Some prefer Symantec's Ghost. With disk imaging, all settings are preserved. Everything comes back just as you had it. No reinstalling Windows, programs or tweaks. Straight from dead disk to running as you were.

Want to upgrade your hard drive or swap info on your hard drive? TrueImage automates all of that with a few clicks.
RAID 5 and disk imaging are your friends.

Acronis True Image is the ultimate backup system. I love it. I backup my server's hard drive to an image file and then I can restore a few files or the entire image to a new hard drive and boot up XP on a new hard drive. Also, if the old hard drive was say 400 gb and the new one is 500 gb then it adjusts the partition to use all the space on the new hard drive. Awesome.

Using Ghost software is a good idea for backing up and moving your OS to a new drive. If you put Windows on a seperate partition, you can just do a backup of the OS files. May be more reasonable than duplicating a whole 200g drive for example. The smartest way to go is to set up an external drive and then create a schedule so the ghosting software runs every other day or once a week etc....
