Just enter the v6 key; it is the full key that you would use.

I expect free upgrades for next version will depend on how soon that upgrade comes around. I certainly wouldn't run on the expectation of v6-v7 being free - once paid version updates are the norm, I'd expect them all to cost.

So maybe the upgrade policy isn't as clear as people keep trying to convince me it is?

If I use the v6 upgrade policy as the model, then I would expect to see one free upgrade included with the purchase price of a full license.

Who says v6 is a "model"? No software company is likely to have decided the price and policy for upgrades 2 versions ahead. You want to know how much v7 will cost and whether it will be free? I'm pretty damn certain you'll have to wait until it's announced! Assuming it will be the same as v6 is clearly not a safe assumption.

When I asked this question earlier (about what a customer might expect regarding upgrades in the future), some people suggested this was a safe assumption.... that's all I'm pointing out.

I guess we differ in opinion here, but I don't think I should have to wait until the next version is released to understand what the terms are on the license I am purchasing today.

1. How much support is included with my license (email support, to use the Sage definition)?
2. Does this license entitle me to any updates (Bugfixes, to use the Olive definition)?
3. Does this license entitle me to any upgrades (the next full point version release)?
4. How long will Sage provide access to the EPG service with my license? (already asked and answered)

You'll note that I'm not asking how much the next version will cost or when it's coming out or what features are in it. And if the answer to these questions is: "Unknown at this time" then so be it. But I'd rather ask the question and get told no, than to not ask the question and be surprised when the policies change.

You're right that it's probably unreasonable to expect a clear answer to all of the questions that I (and others) have posed in this thread. I probably shouldn't expect Sage to be able to tell me today whether or not my v5.0 will be completely compatible or upgradable to v7.0 and that's fine - I guess I can't expect them to have a crystal ball that looks completely into the future.

But, I still believe that those 4 questions above are relevant. And I think the jury is still out on the answers to the first 3 (Thanks to Narflex for providing more background on the answer to Q4).

Only daft people.
Using that logic, v6 would be a free upgrade because v5 was. When no-one (including Sage) knows what features will be in v7, there's no sense in making assumptions about its pricing.

Well, that's not entirely true. Sage's old upgrade policy (buried somewhere in one of these forums and linked to somewhere in this thread was (to paraphrase): "Upgrades are provided free of charge until we decide to no longer provide them free of charge." So, no, I would not have expected that v6 was guaranteed to be a free upgrade.

With Version 6, it looks like the policy changes to: "Buying a full license gets you one free upgrade. Otherwise, you can purchase an upgrade license". But you are correct that this really only applies to v6, so we shouldn't make any assumptions that this will apply to all versions going forward.

I can't find anything on either Dell's side or the MS site which state the coupons are actually being issued yet. The original link above was to a story in Aug and it said "in October", not October 1.

If the coupons were already being issued for current sales, wouldn't Dell or even MS make a bigger statement of it?

Edit: I checked with Dell, and at this point machines are "Vista capable" but do NOT include a coupon for a Vista upgrade. The sales force has no information (they can/will share) regarding when that may change.

I have a problem! I bought my key from PCAlchemy the day they updated their website to version 5 in May. All my emails say version 5. I went to try the beta 6 and it says I have a pre-version 5 key. Stupid PCAlchemy sent me a version 4 key. I am calling them in one hour when they open. They better have answers!

This sucks!

It's nice to know that people who purchased version 4 SageTV in April will have to pay $30 to upgrade after only 6 months.

Edit: PCalchemy claims it is Sage's fault, but it seems that they are going to take care of it. It sounds like I will be receiving an upgrade key.

Thanks for this.

I looked and I also purchased from PCAlchemy in April. I lost my hard drive and don't have the emails any more so I just sent them an email and am hoping to be in the same boat.

Was announced a couple days ago, that the program will start Oct 28th, I'll dig around and see if I can find the link for that. It HAS been confirmed by at least one Dell permier rep, as a friend of mine asked, and was told that it was correct.

Saw the post about it on Neowin, which linked to Betanews:

http://www.betanews.com/article/MS_t...sta/1160157828

Depending on the version you buy, you'll either get a free upgrade, or a much cheaper upgrade.

Either way it doesn't matter to me, I'll get my Vista relatively cheap. Do a search for Microsoft Action pack, and pick one up, 299 for licenses to pretty much all their business software for a year, 10 licenses for XP (and 10 for Vista, not sure the flavor, probably business though), 10 licenses for Office, etc. Last pack I bought even came with a license for Media Center, so I'd assume you'll get one license for at least home premium, or possibly Ultimate.

Anyone know of the exact release date of V5? It may have been April 25th this year as I see a press release on the SageTV main site with an announcement of Placeshifter.

I purchased my copy on April 8th

I just purchased SageTV a couple of days ago, without realizing a beta of the next version had already been released. I emailed support this exact question, and got a response that didn't really answer the question (I'm not sure the person that replied understood the point which I was making).

Had I known v6 was in beta, I probably would have waited to purchase, and just run the beta (or keep running BeyondTV 4.x). If Sage doesn't give a definitive answer to this, I am considering requesting a refund (which you can do within 30 days) and then repurchase when v6 is released. Sage could avoid a lot of frustration and speculation if they would just clarify the situation. I feel that having purchased v5 after the v6 beta is already out, that I should be entitled to a full v6 key.

Even Microsoft is giving free upgrades to Vista for anyone that buys a computer with Windows in the 2 months leading up to the Vista release (maybe someone already made this point).

I am in the middle of my trial, and I bought an upgrade. How do I enter it? I can't find a mechanism to do this (and I wish there was one).

I haven't done it yet, but it appears to be that one box that pops up when you start that has three boxes to select to proceed, the middle one being enter code.

BTW, once you get to within 7 days, you have to click through three messages about there being a time limit. Wouldn't this keep people from autorecording if they cycle their machines on and off, but don't use Sageservice?

I'm not sure you can even use Sageservice with the trial. I know that when I tried to setup Sage v6 on my system, and went stright to configuring the service after install, the service locked up while it was starting. Never finished. Tried it again, and got the same thing. I had to start Sage without service mode, and then realized it was probably because of that 3 button popup window. Once I entered my code, I went back to service mode, and everything was fine.

Thanks for the reply...I am within 3 days of expiration. I get the prompt that says I have 3 days left...but there is NO box that I can click to enter the new key.

The prompt is annoying, in that it does stop Sage from launching. I wouldn't mind it if it just came up on the side.

I am starting to think that I need to reinstall, which seems crazy.

A reinstall does not allow me to enter the key. I am really starting to get worried that I will not be able to enter this new key, and keep all of my favorites, etc. within 3 days.

I have sent an email to Sage. Has anyone else encountered this??
