beginner's question: Good choice for DVD burning?
Goal: Burn to DVD some of the 1 hour standard-def shows that I record with Sage.
I tried Nero 6 OEM and found it confusing. One Sage file causes it and other software to parse the file for 10 minutes and conclude by ignoring it, when choosing that file as the first segment. Another Sage file, also 1 hour, was said to be too large to fit on a standard DVD. I am a complete novice at this. |

You might be better off trying the DVD burning plugin in Sage Customizations. Also make sure in Sage you're chosen to record in a format prefixed with DVD like DVD Standard Format.

thanks - but the DVD burner drive is not on the computer that runs Sage. So I'm trying things like Nero 6 OEM as mentioned above.

I've had good luck with the Roxio products (EZ CD etc). Though at this point I'm using Toast on my Mac.

If you wanted, I could talk you though setting up the DVD buring plugin so that it would just create dvd images that you could burn over the network using nero

would the (WiFi at 36Mbps air link, 10-15Mpbs at IP layer) network be fast enough to avoid underruns if the burner is on a different PC?
I am such a novice that I don't know what to do when a 1 hour mpeg show from Sage is said to be too big to recode and write to a standard DVD as is, using Nero. I merely copied the mpegs from the Sage PC to the PC where the DVD burner is and tried Nero for my first time. One of the mpegs is such that apparently Nero doesn't like the header info - it spends 10 minutes reading the whole file and concludes by ignoring the file - no error messages. Windows media player accepts the file though. Other mpegs are accepted by Nero without scanning the whole file. |

What you would probably want to consider doing is actually copy the mpeg to the PC that has the burner and then burn it from there. Afterwards delete the copy from your PC. Make sure the recording quality you have set in Sage is one of the DVD ones. (It will begin with DVD-like DVD Standard). I actually run a Sage TV client with the DVD burner plugin and burn them from the client. (But I also have gigabit wired conections)

You could use penguins plugin to create the ISO disk image and then copy that to your burning computer also. Since the image would be fully created it would be simple to burn a DVD from the disk image.

Yeah, what acrowe said is a good idea. I definitely don't recommend burning straight over a wireless connection unless you're in dire need of a lot of DVD coasters

Quality is "DVD Long Play" as default.
Hauppauge USB2 = default (as above, I presume) So when I copied a one-hour show, Nero barfed and said it won't fit on a standard DVD. I do have Sage Client on this PC. Making a DVD ISO image (would that be 4GB!) is do-able. Sounds slooooow. Build that, then burn from that. Might run several hours! I will have to check on how to do that ISO burn; I have done so for CDs with "DeepBurner". Is this ISO buring the better way to go than, what, recoding and burning on the fly. |
