poor quality in my pvr-500 amp didn't help

So, I've seen some of the info on the type a and type b 500's. I've got the newer style and all the normal problems with poor signal quality. My pvr-150's are both working flawlessly. I got the 4 port radio shack amp for $50 and have tried that at the entire range of its adjustment with very minimal impact on quality. Connecting the cable feed directly results in a definate improvement although thats not a viable option for a lot of reasons.

At this point would you all recommend getting this rma'd, new drivers or i'm tempted to just get 3 pvr-150's and be done with this whole problem. I've got enough slots on my motherboard for 5 tuners and I don't like to screw around this much. What would be best?

Also, I'm running linux on the server and windows on all the clients so the app won't work to fix this one. And swapping driver versions is a pita.
