How are files transmitted to/from Sage server in playback?

I need to know what happens on playback of a file in a import directory, that is sitting on a remote storage server. Setup would be like this:

|-------(remote pc)
|
|---------(sage server)
|
|----------(htpc)

Will the htpc's playback request of a file sitting on remote pc be initiated by the server, and then the two (remote and htpc) communicate directly, or will the sage server have the stream coming into it and going out to the htpc?

Reason I ask is that I need to add another OTA tuner to my server, and all PCI slots are full, but I could remote my gigabit ethernet adapter and fall back to the motherboard 100mbit connection on the sage server. But if its going to get nailed to the wall with streams going back and forth, I cant do this.

oh and sorry for the crappy text graphics!

Hi Kirby,

I am pretty sure that when playing a file in SageTV that the server gets the file and sends it to the client. But when using an external player (Which I think you do or did) then the player fetches the file directly, effectively bypassing the Sage Server.

Yeah I am using the built in player right now. I might just do a late night swap of the server to another PC if its going to be hogging bandwidth, or maybe I shouldnt worry about it. In real world terms, how many HD streams can a 100mbit link handle? And should I run it full duplex or not?

I thought for recordings if you use UNC paths the client could access the files directly and bypass the Sage server? No idea if the same is true for imported videos though.

Yes, if the client can access files directly, it can play them w/o having to stream through the SageTV server. This is how ripped DVDs are played on the client from the video library, for example.

You would either need to use mapped drive letters on the client to match what the server is using, or use UNC paths.

(However, it still needs to talk to the server to find out about the files in the first place.)
