nvdvd upgrade questions

Hi,
I've read some positive things here about the nvdvd MPEG decoding codecs. CNETpc.com sells nvdvd version 1 for $4 plus shipping, but it's not clear to me if one could upgrade for for free to the new version 2 or not, has anyone tried this?

also, has anyone tried this decoder on a non-NVIDIA card, or is the IQ better because nvidia uses coding specific to geforce hardware?

thanks

I doubt it, Nvidia as a very lame registration system. You have to email them for a unlock code, everytime you reinstall the software. Then if you change your date or time, while in demo mode. You have to format your computer, cause the software self-destructs. Then you have to send a new request for a unlock code. It is a very crappy way to treat your customers.

That hasn't been my experience. I've never had to email them for different unlock codes, and yes, it works fine on non-NVidia cards. I use it on an ATI Radeon 9500 in my SageTV system.

Watter, did you buy it directly from nvidia, or get it with a vid card? What version is your original?
thanks

I have one copy that I purchased and one that I received with a video card. I don't recall which copy I'm using in my current system, but I believe it's the one I purchased because my SageTV system was built before I got the video card that came with NVDVD.
