Help with installation

I just installed SageTV with a Hauppauge MCE 500 card on XP Pro machine. Connected my DirectTV coaxial cable and was trying to setup Sage when I got the following error message while setting up the video.

sage.playbackexception: error(-4,0x80040217)

The card was installed sucessfully and I think it can be installed on an XP machine and MCE is not required.

Can anyone confirm the 500 card is OK with XP?

Any help on the error message will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Which coaxial cable are we talking about here? The one from the dish must remain connected to your DirecTV STB. You then connect the output of the STB to your capture card. You can do this with coax, if that's all you have, but S-Video is the better way to go.

You'll also need to set up some way for SageTV to change channels on the STB, either with an IR blaster or with a serial cable (if your STB supports that). There are numerous posts in the Hardware forum discussing these options.

This is all assuming you have a standard-defintion STB and TV. HD is a whole nother ballgame and can't be done with SD capture cards like the PVR-500.

I haven't tried myself with my 500 as I'm using Svideo - but it's possible that the internal splitter on the 500 is screwing it up. You certainly can't use the dual feature of the 500 with the coax anyway since you can only plug 1 stb into it so as GKusnick said - time to get some Svideo and composite audio cables.

And yes - most people here are using the 500 on XP so it does work.

Thanks for the reply

I really appreciate the response... I have a decent understanding of computers but am a newbie to this DVR area.

At present, I am only trying to get 1 AV input source working. As per GKusnick's suggestion the coax is running from sat dish to sat box, then into 500 card. I double checked the signal and all appears well.

Will need to go purchase the IR remote unit to control the satellite box... I had some concerns about how SAGE would control the STB, but was happy to see there is a way.

On the DIY PVR site, I saw another recommendation to try and get the 500 card to work with WINTV software first (to make sure card is OK), then upgrade to SAGE for recording later.

Glad to hear the 500 card is OK with XP. Since the documentation is very MCE oriented I was having some concerns. XP sees the cards and say everything is working properly... that is why I think it might be related to my Sage setup.

Regards

You will need some way of changing the channel so you can go with either a USB UIRT or if you DirecTV receiver has a serial port you can make custom serial cables to control it - your pc would also need to have a serial port for each receiver to do this.

You don't really even need to do this, you can just go into the Movie Maker on xp and have it capture video from a device. Though I still think you should ditch the coax cable from the receiver to the pc and replace it with composite/svideo cables.
