Help please!
Here's the deal: I have a cable outlet/modem/wifi router in one room but need to locate my PC in another room and still be able to capture the TV signal. I want to use SageTV with placeshifting so I can watch what I record while on the road. How can I get the cable signal from the wall into my remote PC? I haven't chosen the tuner card or anything yet, so anything is fair game. Please give me any suggestions you have. Thanks! ![]() |

Yikes, that is tough. I don't know of anything that will transmit TV signal wirelessly without a PC doing the transmitting, so my only recommendation is running a TV cable into the room with the PC. You can often run it along the edges of the room where it isn't noticeable or even under the carpet. (You can of course go through the walls if you're being hardcore about it).

Why does the PC need to be in a different room? Is this an existing PC you use for other purposes, or a new PC that will be dedicated to SageTV? If the latter, just put it where the cable jack is. If you're thinking the PC has to be next to your TV, it doesn't. Use a media extender in the TV room to stream content from the PC.

I was thinking something like the devices at X10.com but I'm not sure if they would let me change the channels remotely through the SageTV software. I have to get the cable STB info, I know it's a Pioneer with digital cable service (not HD). Otherwise no tips but running a wire to the PC?
Thanks for the responses, frankly I'm kinda surprised because on many other boards I can go days without getting any kind of answer at all. ![]() |

If people knew what you were trying to do they could probably offer some advice. Personally I don't have a clue what you're trying to accomplish.
Room 1: Cable Outlet Modem Wi-Fi Router Room 2: PC Do you plan to use the computer for playback? If so will it be connected to a TV or monitor? Mainly asking why it can't be in the same room as the connections. You didn't mention an STB before and that's a big factor in figuring out how to set things up. I assume the STB will be located in Room 1? IMO the best solution is to run a wire and have everything including the STB connected directly to the computer. You could probably use a wireless transmitter to send the video and IR signals from the STB to the PC in another room, but that's not a very clean solution. You'd be transmitting the video and IR over wireless for recording then transmitting the streaming placeshifter video across your wifi. ![]() I'm assuming you don't have cat5 run to room 2 either?
