Yes QAM is over cable. As far as the copper goes, there's no distinction between analog and digital cable. The only difference is digital cable requires a digital tuner, be it a cable box, QAM TV card, or QAM TV tuner.
The cable box adds the capability for decrypting the encrypted channels. FWIW, I get jack over QAM.
