SageTV and ffdshow

I tried following along in this ffdshow thread, but got really confused--especially when they started talking about the cat .

Can someone point me to a step-by-step procedure to get ffdshow integrated with SageTV so I can improve my image quality? Will I be able to do this only for playback of previously recorded MPEG2 files, or does it also work for live (and time-shifted) TV?

When I saw ffdshow running in SageTV itself that was an accident (and it didn't look good at all -- ffdshow was screwing up the video, perhaps because it was the wrong format). Version 1 of SageTV does not allow you to intentionally set up a chain (which is technically known as a directshow graph) of filters to process the video, with the exception of the Dscaler filter taking output from the Elecard decoder.

It may be possible (with a significant amount of luck) to set up merits for additional filters such that SageTV would using them in building it's filter chain (known as a directshow graph), but I doubt this would work.

Whatever the case, it would indeed apply to SageTV's live tv as well as pre-recorded TV since live tv is really just pre-recorded TV that was recorded 2 seconds ago (or so).

Zoomplayer lets you set up custom graphs and it is fully capable of playing back SageTV-recorded MPEG2 files. Hopefully SageTV 2 will have this capability.

ffdshow tries to insert itself into any graph being built, so long as the input video format is correct, I think.

If you check the raw box in the ffdshow codecs list that should be all the ffdshow configuration you need to do.

You might want to check out the ffdshow FAQ over at AVS:
