DirectX FF/Rew bug?

I recently added another client and it seems to be suffering from the old DirectX FF/Rew bug or something very similar. The solution used to be replacing the 9.0c .dll with the one from 9.0b, but that breaks FSE.

I haven't seen the problem on my HTPC in ages so I'm a little baffled as to why it's happening on the new client. The only thing I can think of is I'm using a very old graphics card (geforce 3) which is only DirectX 8.1 compliant.

I'm running the latest Nvidia drivers and decoder, directX, and java v1.4.12.

I have 3d acceleration on and VMR playback at 1280*1024 with FSE enable is smooth and much better than I expected. It's by far the best looking combination of settings for my setup. Overlay looks horrible and there is no way the card can handle VMR without FSE.

I'm just wondering if anyone else is using a card that's not directX compatible with VMR or have any insight into why I seem to be suffering from the Dx bug?
