DVD/CD combo won't play music CDs

I have a DVD/CD combo that I have used to load Windows, read and write data CDs (and DVDs), etc. but I was going to rip my CDs to use in the Media Center and I found that it won't play music CDs. It shows there is no CD in the drive.

I also tried WMP and MM Jukebox.

I did get it to work once when I had the music CD in the drive when I cold booted XP, but it didn't work again after that.

So far I've been ripping CDs on my main system and loading the Media Center directory via the network, but that is a pain to go back and forth.

Any ideas? I'm thinking I may have to reload XP.
